The van’s around the corner: Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich software upgrade coming to 2011 Xperia smartphones starting from mid-April

March 30, 2012 - 3:58 PM
374 comments

During Mobile World Congress I was lucky enough to taste an actual Ice Cream Sandwich (or two) at the Google booth, and you’ll all be able to experience this sweet software treat on our 2011 Xperia smartphones, starting with the first models from mid-April.

Our developers have been hard-at-work to ensure we’re on track and the highest standards are met to deliver you the best possible user experience on Xperia 2011 smartphones with the upgrade to Android 4.0 platform release.

The first Xperia models to receive the upgrade will be Xperia arc S, Xperia neo V and Xperia ray. For these first models, the rollout will start mid-April and continue over 4-6 weeks.*

Following on, Xperia arc, Xperia PLAY, Xperia neo, Xperia mini, Xperia mini pro, Xperia pro, Xperia active and Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman will receive their scoop starting from the end of May/early June.*

We’ll get back to you once the rollout begins to keep you in the loop with progress and to tackle any questions you might have – as I said, please don’t worry if your kit (customized software specific to your operator and handset) isn’t immediately accessible; they will be made available as soon as they’re ready to go.

The latest version of Android 4.0 is a very powerful OS, brimming with new features and functionality, but it also requires more resource from your smartphone and this may impact performance in some user scenarios. To ensure it’s suitable, and performs for your individual needs, my friends at Developer World have taken a closer-look at how Ice Cream Sandwich will change your 2011 Xperia smartphone – check it out here.

Because this update is a significant revamp of some of your phone’s features, we want to make sure you take a conscious and informed decision to upgrade, so that you continue to enjoy optimum experiences from your Xperia smartphone.

Therefore, we’ll only be making it available for download via PC Companion and Bridge for Mac (i.e. not over the air via 3G or WiFi), and you also won’t receive any update requests or notifications.

Again, we will get back to you with more information in mid-April when the rollout begins.

Finally, with regards to our all new Sony Xperia S, which will be upgraded to Android 4.0 starting from the later part of the second quarter, we will get back with more detailed information on timing over the next weeks.

Talk soon, Ant.

*The availability and scheduling of this software upgrade and specific models upgradeable to Android 4.0 will vary by market and carrier requirements.

Although I agree that support for devices should not be dropped until at least 2~3 generations, it always surprises me how you guys get so mad for the dumbest things.

These guys are doing their best to give you the smoothest experience of ICS on a device which is by far very outdated compared to the specs which ICS was originally made for (dual-core 1GB+ ram devices).

Also, they even cared to keep you constantly updated, even releasing alpha and beta versions so you can test drive their work, and all you do is get mad because they are not perfect. This gives bad rep for them (which is uncalled for), and its why no company ever tries to be nice to their customers. It ends up backfiring on them, like you guys are doing.

All in all, I do appreciate Sony’s work, and wish they keep us informed of everything, like they have been doing!

Hey Mischa – thanks for stopping by.

The rollout is phased over several weeks because we deliver a customized variant of the software for each handset and for each operator partner. Working closely with our partners, we need this time to ensure the software meets our, our partner’s and your expectations. We release the different software variants as soon as they are approved.

Because ICS may impact performance in some user scenarios, we want to give you the choice to upgrade – a decision that’s fully aware and informed – so, you won’t receive any notifications or requests to download the update.

You can find out more on how ICS will change your Xperia smartphone on our Developer World blog: http://developer.sonymobile.com/wp/2012/03/30/learn-about-the-technical-differences-between-gingerbread-and-ics/.

I hope that helps, and we’ll be bringing you regular updates along the way.

      Have a good weekend,

      Ant.

Hey Connor – thanks for your question,

You can’t go back to Android 2.3 on your own, however by handing in the phone at a service centre you can request to have it re-installed with Android 2.3. But, please note that all your data will be erased when re-installing Android 2.3 from Android 4.0, so be sure to do a proper backup of your data before handing the phone in.

          I hope that’s useful,

          Ant.

Maybe this upgrade is too much work only for one corporation , in December 2011 when was SE they planed to make upgrade on end March or early April .Now is only SONY and the upgrade to ICS is a problem ….. too much “hard-at-work” .Something is wrong with public relations , when on the end March almost last day , they say “You Have to wait longer much longer ” .

Glad to hear the update is making progress and looking forward to seeing a release! :)

The extra features will be a real bonus. My Arc works perfectly as it is now so I see no need to rush, I’d rather a stable update a bit late than a rushed one because a mob complain about a delay!

Thats nice, i bought xperia s because i thought that it would be the first to get android ics, now sony says that it will be one of the last ones.. well what can i say? nothing! after all i’m not the one trying to compete with other big brands on the mobile market and it must be a reason why the two big ones are on the top and all others try to follow them.. i still like my sony tab and my sony tv but not my xperia s anymore.

Have a good day all :-)

@Sodaman Soda Awh man you have an Xperia S!? I’m so jealous! I have an Arc currently, but the Xperia S is SO nice! If you really want the update early I’ll happily swap phones? I mean the Xperia S works amazingly with Gingerbread, but by the sounds of things you only want it with ICS.

I’m not sure if that you would be happy if you had that Xperia S. I bought one on 12th March as the screen is terrible. There were dead pixels and yellow spots near the edges, corners and a big one at the bottom, near the transparent antenna. So I made a complaint and got my new Xperia S replacement from my mobile carrier. & the same thing happened again, yellow spots on the screen, especially near the antenna. Apparently, a lot of the users around the globe have this problem and many people are complaining this issue in the technical support forum of sony mobile. Now my 2nd xperia S is in the service center. I’m not sure if they can fix it right. Year on Year i’ve been trusting Sony or Sony ericsson…for almost 9 years now. The experience from getting this 2012 flagship Xperia S of Sony is really regrettablle. Went to try HTC One X yesterday and asked myself, “wth did I stay on with Sony again, why didn’t i wait for another 3 weeks?” People are using quad core now, and at least, they have gorilla glass with their top notch model, without the need of “screen protector” :P

it wasn’t that bad if you had bought Neo V.

Ya, they had admitted and addressed that flaw now. And Sony is thinking …a solution to that yellowish problem on the screen.

Me too … If i had waited awhile longer. I could have bought HTC ONe X or One S.

Hey – thanks for your comment.

Due to customer demand for the first Sony branded smartphones, it has been our priority to get the Xperia 2012 smartphone portfolio out as soon as possible, especially since we knew we would be able to upgrade shortly thereafter.

Upgrading software for new hardware can prove more a little more time-consuming as it requires more resource to introduce new features, as well as approval and certification not always required for smartphones already on the market.

We’ll continue to provide you with regular updates over the course of the rollouts.

      Have a great weekend,

      Ant.

Esto no puede ser, primero nos dijeron que iba a estar como mucho para mediados de abril y ahora nos dicen que va a estar a partir de mediados de abril, que poco compromiso se ve por parte de sony.

This can not be, first told us he would be as much to mid April and now we say it will be from mid April, which is little commitment by sony.

Part of ICS is the ability to ‘disable’ system apps. It doesn’t remove them, but they disappear and can’t ever run, so essentially freezing them. Hopefully Sony will leave this in. Not a perfect solution but it’s good enough for me :)

@Joel i’m sure you would love that :-) the point is not only ics, it’s about the flagship phone of sony with an outdated software, it’s like having the newest model of ferrari with last years engine.. or having the last vaio model with windows vista whie windows 7 is out allready. For sure i would swap my phone now with the new htc’s that are allready available and with ics by default :-)

      Hey Kaarlo,

We’ve introduced a Performance assistant that’ll run at ICS start-up, here you’ll be able to disable certain services and/or processes. Another feature we’ve added is the ‘App-Disable’ functionality, which you can use to remove some of the apps you don’t want or need.

      I hope that helps,

      Ant.

I was under an impression that ICS brought new features for us along with more stability, fast, less power consuming. Now after reading this articles, I think I shouldn’t have brought Sony phones of 512mb ram. Instead I supposed to buy another phone with 1gb ram and more powerful processor. The main reason I brought this phone was Sony’s earlier blog post where had written about ICS was coming to all 2011 Xperia devices, it’s fast, more features, more stable bla bla bla ! Now what I knew, ICS is slow, unstable etc. I am really disappointed this time. I think same thing gonna happened. After ICS no update will be available for 2011 Xperia mobile devices. Same I already faced with x10 mini pro !

Nothing I could blame Sony as they have briefed very technical way (I should knew before purchasing the 2011 phones ) but I do not buy any more Sony mobile phones.

      Hey Soham,

      Thanks for your comment.

ICS does bring new features and functionality. Just quickly, some of this includes: quick dial, allowing you to quickly find the number you are looking for, recent Apps button for clear overview of your applications and optimized email application for multiple accounts.

It won’t necessarily be slow and unstable, but may impact your experience in some scenarios – you can find out more on how ICS will change your 2011 Xperia smartphone here: http://developer.sonymobile.com/wp/2012/03/30/learn-about-the-technical-differences-between-gingerbread-and-ics/.

“You asked for it, we delivered! More details on ICS update for our Xperia devices:”

Is this what we asked? What in a world do you guys think? What company would upgrade their flagship device after rest of old devices? When “APRIL” was advertised for ICS upgrade, whoever bought Xperia S thought that they will get ICS upgrade in APRIL. Now you are talking about JUNE?

Same nightmare from Xperia X10 story is starting again and whoever that has bought Xperia S is fooled by Son’t marketing and advertisements. again…

I’m with you. My wife has a Samsung Galaxy SL bought on the same day I got my Xperia Pro. Samsung has announced that most of their recent/current Galaxy phones aren’t going to get ICS ever (apart from SII and a couple others), and there’s no end to the wailing and moaning on Samsung forums about this. I also have a Lenovo tablet that the company hasn’t yet disclosed ICS upgrade plans about – and there’s more wailing and moaning on their forums.

Meanwhile, Sony’s doing us right by 1. developing an update if we want it, unlike Samsung, 2. being upfront about the limitations and 3. keeping us posted about their timeline.

        Yet still people are complaining.

As far as I can tell, my Gingerbread Xperia Pro is totally stable. It doesn’t have all the fancy zoomy fun of ICS, but it will if I want it next month. But Gingerbread works great.

Gentlemen (and I can fairly guess you’re guys) – do you believe your hysterical threatening and complaining on a message board will result in some sort of benefit in your future? Life’s too short. Chill, my friends.

Thanks Sony. Keep up the great work.

Will you guys be releasing GB 2.3.7 for 2011 Xperias? If so, it would be nice if its gonna be the same UI, effects as with Xperia S (of course without NFC). I think Xperia S UI is feasible on 2011 Xperia.

This would be a great gift if you cannot really push through a better ICS on 2011 Xperias.

Very bad, delayed again, where I have seen this before? I am a user of SonyEricsson T200 from the model, but I see very little commitment from you, I wonder if it really is as difficult as you say? I do not know. I know is they lost another customer, today I happened to SGSII, bye Sony, you were good …

Hello everyone – thanks for all your comments so far.

Many of you are asking about the timelines – we committed to beginning the upgrade in the start of Q2 timeframe and are delivering against this promise by starting the rollout from mid-April. Our priority has and always will be to ensure the software is fully functional and delivering the best user experience. We’ll be rounding up some of your questions next week and answering them in a separate post, so please keep ‘em coming and we will do our best to address them. :)

        Anthony,

With due respect, let them know that we won’t be happy with the dates provided for Xperia S. We did count on Sony’s move by providing and working with developers as a new and shaped mobile company but this is not an upfront and clear view of software upgrade for Sony’s flagship device in 2012. I bought my Xperia S beginning of March and has been a month already, many had it before even I purchase with getting the promise of ICS in APRIL.

We bought this phone as a package, with respect to design and function included, half of feature would only work with ICS upgrade. The box says (ICS Upgradable) but what is the point of upgrading it when ICS is out dated? Jelly bean will be out in few months.

Maybe Sony should have completely skipped the 2012 models and jump to Jelly beans all together so it would’t destroy your good practice of 2011.

Now we all look like fools listening to promises with no proof.

        What if you address this!

Hey Nasr – thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment.

We work closely with our development team to ensure we bring you upfront, honest and firm updates when we can. Due to customer demand for the first Sony branded smartphones, it was our priority to get the Xperia 2012 smartphones out to the market as soon as possible, especially since we knew we would be able to upgrade shortly thereafter.

We’re working to ensure we deliver and sustain the best possible experience on Xperia smartphones for all our users.

Thanks and have a good weekend,

“Our priority has and always will be to ensure the software is fully functional and delivering the best user experience.” – This is a joke, right? Bugs are still present in the X10 software 8 months after the release of update. For two years of using Xperia phones, a single one update is not released on time, always has been postponed. After X10 and Neo V no more Xperia phones for me. Sony constantly repeating the same mistakes.

Well to be honest you saying that you are delivering against that promise is not true now is it and I think you know fine well its not. Customers deserve better than this. I just got off the chat session to a UK rep telling me all he could give me was an apology but he doesnt know why the delay has occurred? To be quite honest I could put it in a slightly more legal term of ‘False Advertising’ as Sony were putting out the word of April for ICS update for Xperia S at the very least early Q2 but now have pushed it right to the very back and in late Q2 which is not as promised. False promises = false advertising in this case and Sony should know that its unacceptable to lure people into this false hope just to draw them into buying the newest handset. Phone companies selling insurance have been fined and stomped into the ground via regulations because its unlawful to mis-sell the product and the same goes in this case! I made it clear to the customer rep that I indeed intend to report this to every corner of the internet including the Android magazine I just bought which I do believe is quite popular and as you well know both facebook and twitter are very powerful tools when needing to spread word to people. Just saying thats all.

This is the frustration of Android. ICS has been out for almost 6 months now but less than 5% of Android owners actually have it on their phones, and by the time they do, Android 5.0 will be rolling out the door. Meanwhile, we’re missing out, not just on the new features of ICS itself, but on apps that have been improved for ICS running devices.

I’ve already emailed Sony expressing my disgust at the fact the one phone that was supposed to get it first has now been listed as one of the last! Its poor and extremely lame, usual excuses I’m expecting as they never give you any real proper answers and try to worm their way out of giving you the real reasons.

many friends at work buyed this phone because ICS update..and now?xd this is a joke?
From begining when u planed build and Xperia S phone u should prepare for ICS. xd
U guys at SONY must know that ..that People expect newest things in new products ! New products have priority….
On box should say ” Upgradeble to ICS ….in far future ”
Maybe u will change ur minds…after so many ppl are now complaing about that and start changing “things”,but i think now is too late for that :/
      shame on you Sony .
next time remember : New products have priority !

As a Xperia Neo user, it’s sad to hear I have to wait for another one or two weeks compared to original date.

But I completely understand the difficulty since I have seen many companies and software developer have difficulties on ICS.

Think about it, it isn’t a big deal:
    1. You knew it will definitely be there, for the sake of Beta in the wild.
    2. The current GB build runs perfectly. ICS as a OS alone will not make camera shooting faster, games running faster, video playing smoother, app launching faster. Probably the only new user experience you will notice is the Holo theme. Others are nice improvements.
    3. one or two weeks won’t kill you, right? Time flies when spending with Angry Birds in Space. :)

Another bad planning is to give priority to older devices that have less RAM and slow CPU than the more ICS-friendly Xperia S. If you had changed before your priority now Sony just had an ICS device at the top of the concurrence.

Hey Shang – thanks for your comment.

Applications in ICS use slightly more RAM (talking generally here that this is your smartphone’s ‘working memory’) – for example the web browser uses roughly 20-30MB more when compared to GB. However, we’ve optimized the RAM management and are introducing a Performance assistant that’ll run at ICS start-up. Here you’ll be able to disable certain services and/or processes.

You can find out more on how ICS will change your Xperia arc S on our Developer World blog: http://developer.sonymobile.com/wp/2012/03/30/learn-about-the-technical-differences-between-gingerbread-and-ics/

We’ll be providing more information on there, and here on the Xperia blog as soon as the rollout begins.

      Have a good weekend,

      Ant.

Lt26, purchased in March 18, the first time i shut out the phone yesterday,it downed, and i cant turn it on at first, then i tried power- switch & Voice-Up, finally i got it on, but shortcut on the desktop disappeared.
this morning, it auto restarted and the shortcut disappeared again.
    Can anybody tell why?

I was fooled by the ‘ICE CREAM available’ on the package, so how much longer EXACTLY do i have wait until the IC coming out?
I have encouraged 3 colleges to buy the Lt18i 3 month ago when i was using X10, i really loved the xperia since the X1, so do not disappoint me this time.

I’d just like to make a point, to all those happy to wait or happy with their Xperia S as they are, fine thats your opinion and good for you if you are happy but by the sounds of it there are A LOT of people that are not happy and we are entitled to our opinions too!

I too bought the Sony Xperia S which I thought was a tad over-priced but after reading reviews and seeing the information on when the ICS update was due I thought what the hell you know i’ll only have to wait til around mid April according to the feelers put out there by Sony, however after seeing this new update on the situation I’m utterly disgusted with Sony. They promise but they don’t deliver. I’ve just written a lengthy email to them but I expect to get a few lines back from them with some kind of lame or poor excuse with some techno babble about how it takes time and blah blah blah which is not what I or other people want to hear, I did say to them in the email I don’t want excuses but I’ll probably get them anyways!

Might just jump ship again to HTC as after all their new One X has good specs with ICS already on it! I started with HTC then jumped to Samsung then to Sony, maybe time to complete full circle!

Disappointed Sony, expected more and so did everyone else!

    hi sony
pls dnt try to disappoint ur customers, because in the case of x10 also u first give us such a big expectations and make us wait for a period and after tht u upgraded telling tht it was so hard to customize GB on x10.but most of the other developers in XDA are still using X10 and they even run custom ICS roms …. in this case also (2011 smart phones) u r trying to tell ur customers the same tht happend in the X10 case, pls dont disappoint us, understand tht ur products are good thats the reason that so many trust on u…. but pls take effort to increase the quality of ur softwares. and make a good relationship with customers….customers and their trust are ur values dnt try to disappoint thm and lose their trust, in this electronic world some devices gets faulty and some gets a bad impression on you. but thts not a problem… but in the case of 2011 smartphones u r betraying all ur customers by simply giving them expectations not some .

    @andro
The Xperia S is really a great smartphone and the camera is awesome. But there are some bugs with GB 2.3.x, using GPS that the signal gets lost and the device drivers for the power consumption are bad programmed. The battery of the Xperia S with low usage runs only 24 hours without WLAN, GPS,… wo Widgets and all features disabled…

But if Sony don’t want me as longtime iPhone user then i switch back…

i agree with you, Sony good as a hardware providers, bad as a programmers.
better to work as intel or amd, to provide only parts of hardware, and keep the programming for professionals.
compare the built in apks, there is nothing special, even sony market apk’s not updated since very long time.

The Xperia S has been my first Sony smartphone, and it will be the last one, if Sony won’t update it before June.
Next time I’ll choose a Google Experience phone…

We need more explanation why you will upgrade XS the last one. It is 2012 mobile not 2010.
