Kicking-off Ice Cream Sandwich software upgrade for 2011 Xperia smartphones

April 13, 2012 - 5:00 PM
512 comments

Hello everyone – a quick update,

Starting from today (13th April), we’re beginning the Sony software upgrade including the uplift to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for our 2011 Xperia™ smartphones.

The software will initially be made available for Xperia arc S, Xperia neo V and Xperia ray for consumers in Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, Finland and Norway. For the above models, the software rollout will continue over the next 4-6 weeks, becoming available in other global markets – we will update you here on the blog when additional markets can upgrade.

You’ll be able to see when the software kit (customized specific to your operator and handset) is ready on our support community; http://talk.sonymobile.com  – please continue to check in if your kit is not yet listed, as it will be updated when new kits become available.

In order to upgrade your 2011 Xperia smartphone you will need to connect to a PC or Mac – please visit http://www.sonymobile.com/update and follow the instructions.

Following on, Xperia arc, Xperia PLAY, Xperia neo, Xperia mini, Xperia mini pro, Xperia pro, Xperia active and Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman will receive their scoop starting from the end of May/early June*.

Thanks for all your comments and questions so far; please keep them coming and we will continue to answer as many as possible.

I appreciate the effort releasing ICS to all xperia 2011 line up, but leaving xperia S, P, U and sola for last just seems senseless…

Nothing really strange about that – they probably have several reasons. First, if you are to get a product out the door with one Google release, and get that approved by carriers, it would not be a good idea to work with a completely different Google release at the same time, on the same products. That’s called focus.
Secondly, getting ICS out on the previous products is important for those of us who have bought them with ICS in our sights, and we would be sorely disappointed if the newbies got the fast lane treatment.
And thirdly, my impression of the new devices is, that there is not much ICS can bring which would make a huge difference except ticking the box – at least until many more apps are updated to take advantage of the new features. Even the Nexus Galaxy is, in my opinion, a mess of old and new interface stuff with little constancy between and even within apps. Yes, ICS is really a work in progress, not the huge breakthrough Rubin and Co wants to make us all believe.

I’ve been checking these blogs for news on when the ICS update would start rolling out, and when I saw this post I thought ‘Hooray! Finally, it’s here!”. AAAAAAND then I read the part where it says “for consumers in Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, Finland and Norway”. I live in the UK, England to be precise. THE COUNTRY WHICH I READ BEFORE ON OTHER SITES THAT IT WOULD BE GETTING IT FIRST! When will we have to wait till exactly then? AGAIN!

    Too many delays, Sony!

Someone with Xperia Neo V could give some first impressions about the Update? I’m one Neo’s owner and I want to know how smooth is working in Neo V or even the other phones? I will be glad to hear any review here. Please send some reviews, about performance and etc.

Anthony do you believe that Neo will be released soon? It has the same hardware of Neo V, the difference is just the partitions layouts. Please give anything new about Xperia Neo.

I am in Colombia and I have the Neo V. With a night reading tutorials in xda-developers I managed to Unlock the bootloader, flash the kernel, and install the official nordic release thru Flashtool. (You can download the official rom and everything you need explained step by step in Xda also) and I think it is pretty good. As of now no issues with Wi-fi, Data or signal. The screen is a lil bit less responsive than GB but I think is a good ICS port so far. A Holo theme would have made the roms more “Attractive”. What elese can I say…Oh yes, if you read and learn more about flashing phones (no need to be a hacker, I am NOT) you do not have to wait for SONY to WANT to give you the rom thru PC Companion.

Well I do not have si number on my mobile.. which would mean its not carrier dependent and its not dependent on the country .. that being the case I hope the global ICS version would fit into it. am I right?

Have you tried to get your SI # this way dial (*#*#7378423#*#*). Then hit Service info > Software info and look for the ‘Customization Version’? or remove your battery and it will be there.

You could start the update for Neo, Arc, Play etc end April-mid May.
Why first user should wait more then others?
The difference between two roll out is about 2 month !!! very disappointing

Yes it is a known problem. If the screen gets to hot, exposed to temperatures over 40 celcius, a shade of yellow can appear. This is however, according to Sony, a limited amount of Xperia S that gets this error.

You hand in your phone to your local service center and they will replace your phone for free.

“Sony Mobile Communications will solve this error without charge for the customer”

We here in India are waiting for the update.. Hope it reaches us without any more unnecessary delays.. I personally feel the update should be rolled out globally..

IS SONY ERICSSON/SONY NOT A GLOBAL CORP..???

    C’mon guys…. you can do better than this…. Can’t you….???

A honest customer centric answer will be expected and appreciated.

If you can not answer questions like “When is updating the country x” then if I see have to wait until May, June to appear in my country ROMANIA
sony sucks you said will appear in the heart of April we understand, and now big “update” only five countries after many delays and have not been able to update globally …
    sony you suck …
    I am very nervous I
from a big fan of Sony …. Sony engineers today than disappoint me, you are liars … you will never reach the top of lies …. I’m sorry I got sony I will move on Apple and Samsung phones ..
