An update on our Ice Cream Sandwich Android 4.0 rollout for 2011 Xperia™ smartphones

April 25, 2012 - 4:52 PM
536 comments

Hello everyone – a quick update,

The Sony software upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for our 2011 Xperia smartphones; Xperia arc S, Xperia neo V and Xperia ray is progressing as planned and we are continuing the rollout across markets globally.

You can see the released software kits* (customized specific to your operator and handset) on our support community; http://talk.sonymobile.com – please continue to check in if your kit is not yet listed, as it will be updated when new kits become available.

In order to upgrade your 2011 Xperia smartphone you will need to connect to a PC or Mac – please visit http://www.sonymobile.com/update and follow the instructions.

Again, thanks for all your questions, comments and Android 4.0 Xperia reviews – these are all incredibly useful to us, in terms of using your feedback to improve the experience we provide for you – please keep them coming and we will continue to address as many as possible.

Ant.

*The availability and scheduling of this software upgrade and specific models upgradeable to Android 4.0 will vary by market and carrier requirements

Can the developer world add the old application “take screen shot” in ics for the following update? I’m eager to get this feature back? I’m happy to see it again and hope you will fulfill my request. What’s more. Can you make the back in message or setting as smooth as the gingerbread 2.3.4? Thanks beforehand.

For the SCREENSHOT feature, press and hold the POWER BUTTON+VOLUME DOWN button, and don’t let go till you here the shutter sound. It’s a bit tricky at first, but you’ll get used to it. ;-)

Additional thoughts for the ICS on Xperia Arc S:

I noticed that there’s another bloatware named “GALLERY.” While there’s an official gallery viewer named “XPERIA GALLERY” already. Hope SONY makes an update again to remove the other gallery viewer. We don’t need 2 gallery viewers.

I’m the owner of xperia Ray. after the update to ICS my phone has the following problems:
    1. the background was not as shiny as gingerbread 2.3.4. there should be improvement for this part
2.video camera is much slower than before when recording.
    3. there’s bug when returning to home screen.

lastly, I would appreciate if Sony could update Ray’s camera from PHOTO LIGHT to FLASHLIGHT??????? thanks beforehand.

Any One owns Neo V, I wouldn’t go for the update, as I have just updated mine from two hours to android 4 ICS and its performance went down, lots of not responding applications, restarted the phone till now 4 times, the worst about the update is its phone activity application which takes long time to start around 10 seconds which is a bit annoying. I wish I didn’t go for the update…. I thinking of going to the store to downgrade it to its old android which was great.

      Hey,

You can’t go back to Android 2.3 on your own, however by handing in the smartphone at a service centre you can request to have it re-installed with Android 2.3. But, please note that all your data will be erased when re-installing Android 2.3 from Android 4.0, so be sure to do a proper backup of your data before handing it in.

      I hope that’s useful,

      Ant.

Sony is forgetting their SE Xperia series duo to their new series Xperia S… They are more focused on marketing (Promoting, sales and improving) the new phone Xperia S, Xperia P, Xperia U which is released by SONY… and Forget the mobile Sony Ericson..Because they are not interested to do anything for their previous mobile phone… As Xperia Arc is released earlier it should get update earlier not Xperia Arc S… so please guys make sure you update all in the same time… and make sure their is no partiality between any of your mobile handset… :) hope fully you guys will focus everyone equally…

I own an Xperia S and apparently, the update to the new ICS is not yet available, so I can say that Sony is not keeping aside the Xperia 2011 line up, at all. I’m quite jealous actually, but Xperia 2012 line up does not have a specific date yet. Jeez, I wish I could just know when exactly other than just knowing vaguely when.

Hi. Anthony I’m from Philippines and I I upgraded my Xperia Neo V to ICS last 2 weeks. . It’s official because I use the Nordic version… and I don’t satisfied on the ICS update… there’s still bugs that need to be update… Is there a possibilities/ are you doing some update to have a better performance the 2011 xperia smartphone.? i mean if I’m one of the developer, like you. I want to update the music player like the music player in the xperia s. and home screen. some of the widget which was install in gingerbread are not compatible with 4.0.3. and the home bottom. you say that when you press and hold the home the apps that in / running in the background will appear and in just swiping them left or right we can end that application… but it isn’t like that… I tried it.. but it still running the application in the background…. last night i read some blog that you are doing some update… 4.0.4 and they say that it is still beta…. please do some update in ICS so that we will receiving a better performance on our smartphone…. one thing… why on the home screen when It is lock and my phone receives message or notification it won’t appear on my lock screen the notification? please fix… and sorry for my English… I’m just a student…..

Hey – thanks for taking the time to pull this together,

We’re looking at all our user feedback and will continue to refine our software updates.

Our first update is Android 4.0.3 – Google released 4.0.4 when our release for Xperia arc S, neo V and ray was in final testing. As the difference to 4.0.3 is small, we released on 4.0.3 to deliver against our promised timings and to ensure we quality secured 4.0.4 – it will come in a further upgrade.

Hope all’s going well with the studies!

My Xperia Arc S updated to ICS. But…

    1) some widgets like Photo & Video not working very well. Sometimes it keeps loading, loading and loading.

    2) I like the old Favorite widget most then the new Contact Person, It make more steps to connect people.

    3) I like to camera interface more then the new one. It cannot change shutter sound in ICS. By the way, Xperia S can turn off shutter sound, why Xperia Arc S cannot?

    4) The new Lock Screen is good but can it work with PIN as well?

ICS 4.0.3 upgrade has been a slick interface threat, with the downside of lower battery performance. The phone in question, Xperia Ray on Airtel, India (if carrier does have an impact on the below problem). The battery performance has hit down south and review of usage in past 3 days, hint that the standby for the same usage as earlier, is down by almost 45-55%. Yes, read it right. What used to be earlier a standby of 36 hours earlier with 3G usage on 2.3.4, is now 12-14 hours max. for the same usage. Is this a known bug in ICS, as indicated in many other forums? If so, request to add this as a disclaimer before others also fall prey. Please get this unusually fast battery drain issue fixed.

Maybe it is time to tell us something new SONY…
Let us know why you decided like you did…
Tell us why the 2011 line is more importent for you to support with ICS, than it was to release the 2012 line with ICS loaded from the start…
Tell us why you release ICS for older phones first…
Tell us why you keep the same guidelines and fu.k with the customers just like the old sonyericsson brand did…
Tell us why you don´t at least release drivers and other needed parts of ICS to the 2012 line, so skilled devs can build actually working ICS for our 2012 phones…

I can hornestly say that this Xperia S WILL be my verry last SonyEricsson phone, as i feel that you sh.t on the peolpe who buy your products…

    Remember SONY:
Without any to buy your new products, you will NOT have any money to support the old eigther.
It IS in fact us, your current customers that pay you, so you should take good care of us !

Hey Peter – thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment,

Due to demand for the first Sony branded smartphones, it has been our priority to get the Xperia 2012 smartphone portfolio out as soon as possible, especially since we knew we would be able to upgrade shortly thereafter.

Upgrading software for new hardware can prove more a little more time-consuming as it requires more resource to introduce new features, as well as approval and certification not always required for smartphones already on the market.

We’ll continue to provide you with regular updates on the rollouts for all our Xperia smartphones.

      I hope that’s helpful.

      Ant.

I have updated my Neo V and Upgrade to 4.0 seems to be great as of now. The notifications (sms, missed calls) in lock screen is disappeared as of now we need to unlock the phone to check for mcall and new sms. Please put the notification in lock screen. Taking screenshot has become complicated as we have to press lock button and volume down button simultaneously to capture a screen. Please give us a direct option to take screenshot as Sony had given in gingerbread option. As we control music from lock screen please provide same option for radio as well as it is difficult for us to unlock phone and then go in radio app every time to change fm stations (it is very essential).

        Hi Manpreet,
Thanks for your reply. But if you remember in gingerbread we used to see miscall and sms notification as soon as you pressed lock/unlock button. It was ease. As for ICS, If suppose i am travelling i have to press lock/ unlock key then drag the notification bar (in lock screen) to see if there are any notification. It would be great if they integrate this in next update. Neways lets hope user get used to this new notification system in notification bar. What are your thoughts on my other issues i pointed out.

Yes its easy, but in evry new versions of Android there are some Pros and Cons every time…. But its good if Sony can do something for notifications… And for radio if you are listening Radio via Headfree, you can change the chennal via dobule clicking the call button….. and also you can change track by double clicking the call button in headsfree….. Sony did all what they can do to make it ease in ICS…. I love this update and we hope Sony will give some good updates in ICS further also…….

            Hi Anthony,

I am happy with Sony’s ICS initial offering. I have posted few of my queries hope Sony resolves it in next update. Also i want to know why Android doesnot support business cards. Whenever some one sends contact details through business card it never gets delivered. Whenever i try to send contacts through business card it first gets converted in MMS object. This is really something Google or Sony should take initiative at making things easy for sending business card to any android or Symbian or ios, BB phones. Sending and receiving business card in symbian, java phones was so easy. Hope you understand my concern. Most of the users might agree to this issue.

            Thanks,
            Satish

    Hello everyon,
First thanks for the update Sony :-)
My mobile is xperia ray and I am really happy with ICS,
but I noticed in both xperia gallery and gallery that they
does not update new folders when I create them in sd card.
Also the call log keeps start from top beginning when scrolling.
At last I would thank you for the hard work you have done
    Best wishes

Its great that Sony Mobile has upgraded the 2011 phones but there are areas of improvement.
    Some which may be considered:
Some Apps like Temple Run do not work compared to Gingerbread.
Face Unlock works poorly (1/10 chance of success ) in unlocking
Doesn’t feel like a true ICS ( compared to other phones like Galaxy Nexus)
However I still choose ICS over GB. It is the main reason why I bought Xperia Neo V over others.
If Sony were to improve the OS, I’d really appreciate it.
