Extended Standby Mode for Xperia™ P

August 28, 2012 - 10:00 AM
36 comments

Guys,

Last week I mentioned “Extended Standby Mode”, a new feature in the Xperia P Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade that can increase standby duration by up to four times – it’s pretty cool so I thought I would take a closer look.

When looking at daily usage alongside power consumption, it’s clear that a high proportion of battery power is consumed while you’re not actively using the device; you might not be aware of apps trotting along in the background and syncing continually, sapping battery juice.

Some people choose to minimize power consumption by tweaking relevant settings or by downloading different apps from Google play. In your Xperia smartphone user guide, we detail the best ways to save power but, we wanted to come up with something new, improved and intuitive  - making it simple to ensure power is only consumed when you need it.

So, after turning your Xperia P screen off, processes run as normal for 15 minutes, before Extended Standby Mode kicks-in…

  • Most apps are closed down, with data connection turned off
  • App sync is suspended and notifications won’t pop up
  • LED only illuminates to indicate low battery, with a prompt to the Power Management setting when running low
  • Ongoing data streaming continues
  • Calls, SMS, MMS, Sony Mobile Calendar and Alarm notifications work as normal

And when you reactivate the handset by hitting the power button… you will have the Android experience you know and love; apps will sync, with notifications working as usual.

Got your Xperia P (running ICS) in hand? Good. Simply hit Settings – Power Management – Activate Extended Standby Mode, and you’re ready to go!

If you have any questions on Extended Standby Mode, feel free to drop them below :-)

Unfortunately it’s not working in all of the cases. For example “Android System” app is now keeping awake my phone consantly, I had around 20 percent battery drain last night alone. :(

My Xperia S runs Android 4.0.x (“Ice Cream Sandwich”), yet I don’t see this feature… Any chance we’ll see an update made available to include this feature, or will this be included in the Android 4.1.x (“Jellybean”) upgrade?

I am wondering how much juice this can save, since according to the battery history the biggest consumer is the Display.

    Anyway, testing now, Day 1.

    OK guys, nice feature.
Ad some configuration options and it would be perfect!
    For example:
    - Option to change the time span after which the phone disables the connections
    - Option to enable a time after which the connections are enabled again (for syncronisation, messages, facebook…)

    Cheers,

    Tobber

I really like the Extended Standby mode but it would be great if I had the chance to activate/deactivate it using the Smart Connect app. For example, I don’t need the Extended Standby mode while my XPERIA P is connected to its charger. Would be great to see this feature with one of the next Smart Connect app updates!

I’m greatly impressed by the Xperia P. The ICS update has really pumped up the battery life. Now battery lasts for almost 30 hours on a single charge and with normal use. No chatting, no gaming.

This seems like a good idea for an update. I haven’t received the update for my xperia go, so I haven’t had the chance to try it, but it seems like it could use some extra functionality. Look at the other apps that do this like 2x battery or JuiceDefender… They give you the option to reconnect the data connections every x amount of time. I don’t want to have to unlock my phone to see if I have any new e-mails or chat messages. Somebody here already mentioned switching off the battery management while charging. Also, I do check the led to see if I have any new messages. I’d have to try it to see how it works for me, but since this is a system app and it also shuts off other background processes it looks like it could really work better than whatever else is out there.
