Latest software upgrade rollout starts for Xperia™ go, Xperia™ U and Xperia™ sola – introducing new media applications and uplift to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich

September 28, 2012 - 12:56 PM
722 comments

Hello everyone,

Today we’re starting our software rollout for Xperia go, Xperia U and Xperia sola including Ice Cream Sandwich Android 4.0 upgrade and new unique media applications. The rollout will continue over the next few weeks in markets globally.

Some of the cool features and functionality you can look forward to include:

  • New ways to experience your tunes, images, videos and films with Sony’s media applications – “WALKMAN”, “Album” and “Movies”
  • Extended standby mode, increasing standby time by up to four times (depending on user-profile and data consumption)
  • Lock screen with improved functionality
  • Resizable widgets for improved personalization
  • Improved control of your mobile data consumption
  • Recent Apps button for a clear overview of your applications

I’m also excited to tell you about “Glove Mode” – a sweet feature in the software upgrade for Xperia sola (known as Xperia sole in some markets). It’s an extension of our “floating touch” technology that makes it possible to use your Xperia sola in the cold whilst wearing gloves… just in time for the winter months. My colleagues at Developer World have taken a closer look – head on over to check it out!

We’re kicking-off the rollout today, and ramping it up over the weekend – from mid next week you’ll be able to see software kits as they’re released (customized specific to your operator and handset) on our support community. Please check-back then for the direct link and continue to do so, as the list will be updated when new kits become available.

It’s worth noting that in order to upgrade, you will need to connect to a PC or Mac – please visit http://www.sonymobile.com/update and follow the instructions.

Thanks for all your questions so far and as always, feel free to drop a comment or question below.

Ant.

*The availability and scheduling of this software upgrade and specific models upgradeable to Android 4.0 will vary by market and carrier requirements

Sony promises more but delivers nothing…… I was a great sony fan but now i feel they are not showing any importance to their customer desire only on creating new products. Maintenance and updates have equal importance like creation sony please understand it.

        Hi @anthony and the others,

I Updated My Xperia Go with the latest delivered ICS update from Sony, but the downside is that my phone is a lot more sluggish and slow now. I had around 20 plus installed apps in my GO when it was running GingerBread and boy it ran smooth like butter! I’ve tried factory reset + repairing the update, still with no improvement. Can some one suggest a solution for this?
        It says 6.1.1.B.1.10
        #XPERIA GO
        Thanks!

        Hey Anthony,

maybe you have answered that question somewhere before. You always state that the ICS update is a phased roll out and will take several weeks. But you never say when the roll out phase will end. Is there a distinguished plan for the roll out in general or sorted by model? I know that customers are not “allowed” to ask for when their SI will be next and I completely agree with all users complaining about that issue. It is a real pain to wait for an update once you have announced it. For future releases I wished you’d only announce the update when you have finished testing and are ready to roll out at once for all models you have decided to give the update to.

        Kind regards,
        Dennis

“We’re continuing to evaluate future Android upgrade paths for our 2012 Xperia smartphones. But, as of today, I’m happy to confirm Xperia T and Xperia V will be upgraded to Android 4.1 ”

Really? What is there to consider? You do realize that other manufacturers are rolling out Jelly Bean now. Is Sony “considering” losing loyal customers to the competition? Because it seems like you’re on the right path. There is nothing to consider if Sony wants to compete and stay alive. The only acceptable answer would be “Of course all of our 2012 phones will be updated! Because we value all of our customers, not just some of them, and also because we’re not just heating up our seat in the Open Handset Alliance but we do want to make a difference”

I don’t know why some people are thanking for this update, it was late and it was what we payed Sony to do the moment we bought our devices. I hope it’s a stable release at least since you took so long. If this phone does not get Jelly Bean and Key Lime Pie I will never support Sony Mobile again by buying your products or recommending them to others.

…and you just update by means of the Sony PC Companion?

Hey W.H – for these smartphones, the sw package could be too large to be handled in the phone itself, so it’ll only be available be through PC Companion or Bridge for Mac.

We ensure stability this way :)

And 4 hours later anyone get the update. You just said it to shut us up or what? When you announced the ICS update for Xperia P, 3 hours later the poeple was commenting about they got ICS on their phone…This is just not fair, I´ve got the Indian firmware, so I would be the first zone in get it, but when?
I can´t take anymore the waiting and waiting….
