Continuing Android software upgrades – Jelly Bean for 2012 Xperia™ smartphones

October 19, 2012 - 12:54 PM
710 comments

Hello everyone,

There’ve been a fair few questions here on the blog, our support forum and our social media channels, regarding upgrade plans for Android 4.1 (also known as Jelly Bean). Today we are happy to give you a bit of an update. :-)

Our latest models, Xperia T and Xperia TX are shipping across global markets as you read this post, and Xperia V is on the way shortly – these smartphones will begin to receive the upgrade to Jelly Bean from mid-Q1 2013.

Next up, we can confirm the global versions of Xperia S, Xperia acro S, Xperia ion, Xperia P, Xperia go and Xperia J will be upgraded to Android 4.1* – we will be back with detailed timings for these in due course.

We were glad to provide the Android 4.0.4 upgrade for our 2011 Xperia portfolio across most markets and the majority of models but, after thorough evaluation, we have concluded they will not be upgraded beyond Ice Cream Sandwich.

Beyond Ice Cream Sandwich we would not able to guarantee owners of these smartphones the user experience you expect and we demand. We will however, continue to support all these products with firmware maintenance releases.

As usual, the only official software update news will be found regularly here on the blog and we’ll keep you posted as soon as we have news to share.

If you have any questions, feel free to drop them below.

Will…

*Availability and rollout timing will vary by market and customer variants.

hi will. That fine i agree that you should spend time only on the newer handsets. However whilst other manufacturers are delivery their JB update now, and Sony is asking us to wait till feb, i am a Xperia S user and am appalled with Sony. i am a Sony fan but this doesn’t help.

You are posting an update to the Jelly Bean for 2012 xperia? Many users have not yet updated to ICS! When I bought my Xperia U, Sony promised that I would get an update to ICS in Q3 2012 – but that was just a lie! And now I find out that my Xperia U will not get updated to JB! Sony has done a very good phone, great quality and very good specification – but just as in the case of laptops vaio, all updates come out very late so that when an update is available the software is already obsolete! This is certainly my last phone from Sony – a much better choice would be the Nexus (even Nexus S, which was shown in 2010, has already JB!)

Sony Xperia U scores almost same benchmarks as Samsung Galaxy S Advance, Xperia P, Xperia sola.

If Xperia P can get 4.1 upgrade, why cant Xperia U ? ?

Dont want to run custom ROM on my Xperia U.

SONY do some thing for Xperia U.

hi Mr. Will, may i ask what is needed to be evaluated on xperia U? if xperia P, Go and J can have it then i think xperia U and Sola can handle it without problem too, also xperia U is a 2012 phone of sony also, all of us are hoping for it.

      +1
Same for SE Xperia neo V with similar CPU and RAM.
Hardware is not to blame, only the insufficient manpower to develop optimized software and the commercial strategy of Sony Mobile (scheduled obsolescence, superfluous apps) are.
Instead of focussing on a limited phone portfolio and the developpment of uptodate software including the apps they are reknown for (Walkman, photo – Cybershot), Sony chose to release a lot of new phones, some of which are similar to two-year-old ones which is confusing, and not to follow closely the evolution of the OS they use.
According to me, this is a mistake since the innovation in smartphones comes equaly from hardware and software, and a lot of custumers want to have an uptodate phone.
Personaly, I think my next phone will be a Nexus which offers a real long-term support. I chose the SE because I had a good experience with my old phone (K530i) that I had not found with my Samsung. I am now disappointed by the software support and upgrade: ICS came with bugs and old apps (no Walkman, old dialer and messaging apps).

Really strange…. Why Xperia J going to get update, and Live with walkman won’t get update? LWW even have got better, stronger processor… Even ARC S would not get update? At least fix bugs in worst ICS for LWW. Big disappointment from sONY.

Did you read the post? They said they will give you a maintenance upgrade to fix those bugs. Stop complaining if you did not read the news. If they can’t give you the right user experience, you guys would complain that it’s slow/lags again any ways. If it’s working good enough, just wait for their maintenance upgrade.

You might not like my comment, but more than 6 months between the moment it’s presented and the moment it’s rolled out to your handsets is far too long for me. Xperia S has a great screen and a more than decent camera but it’s probably my last sony phone….

What are you doing? You are pissin on me. Look at Samsung Galaxy SIII, they already got JB. I think Xperia S should get JB before Galaxy SIII but no… Im done with Sony, thats for sure. I did buy a tablet for almost 3 weeks ago and it wasnt a Sony tablet, and im glad that I didnt buy a Sony tablet. I bought Samsung tablet and my next phone will be a Samsung! Bye bye Sony and thanks for NOTTHING! You always give me headache, nothing else!

Arc S is TOP model from end the of 2011. And device parameters are capable to handle 4.0, and even more capable to handle lighter 4.1. Quallcom released 30% faster Adreno drivers for JB 4.1. Besides 4.1 is much smoother than 4.0. SONY WHY DON”T YOU UPDATE ARC S to 4.1 ?

xperia J is a lame phone with 1 GHz and arc s is a 1.4 GHz i am very sure that none of you idiots know simple first grade math

how could Sony do this to its customers and then you have a damned mouth to say “we deliver the best experience to our users” while on the XDA forum a none-professional man creates the simplest script that actually gives an acceptable experience to our poorly dumped phone
on your “best user experience” official ROM you get a 10-15 MB of free ram while in that script you get more that 90-100 and still have a full multitasking experience

go Sony I hope to see you burn in HELL!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah sure, “best user experience”, like real. You people should really use a typical user’s 2011 Xperia and see how laggy it is, not your 2011 Xperias with just the stock apps and bloatware that seem as if the phone was buttery smooth, akin as to on Jelly Bean!

I am also another really disappointed, arc s owner, poorly executed buggy ics, AT LEAST FIX THAT!! if you wont give us jb. The only fix available for led broken by update is root and basic patch on xda! available within weeks, months later and STILL no official fix! do you want us to root and forget the warranty???
sony software developers must be really crappy if they cant get it together to fix this. samsung will win this unless sony can shape up…Ericsson took all the decent software engineers when they split it seems.
So you claim that you are still supporting this phone? how about honouring that empty claim with a bug fix, nothing AT ALL for months…

If Google Nexus S (1GHz single core, 512MB) can run JB why Sola or U (1GHz dual core, 512MB) need to be evaluated?
Next phone will be a Nexus.

I recently installed CyanogenMod 10 (FreeXperia) which provides JellyBean on my Xperia Arc S: works flawlessly. I recommend you (Sony) fire all your software engineers and hire folks from FreeXperia, because obviously they doing better job than your employees.

For those, who are cheated (yes Sony, CHEATED, because you promised support till end of 2012!) and want to try JellyBean you could try CyanogenMode from:
    http://code.google.com/p/freexperia/
Version 10 (CyanogenMode10) is JellyBean, but beware, that this version is still in development and you could encounter problems running it. In my case there was nothing drastic and now I could enjoy pure JB (stock Holo theme looks greate for me) without ‘UEFA Football shortcut’-like unwanted-ware.

    Cheers.

couldnt to agree with you more. SONY should fire all their software team and hire folks from FreeXperia, and even find more people from XDA forum, who made like REAL ICS and other gret roms, and fixes bugs realy fast. Not like these programers, who are working now so slow, and making such a lot of bugs in all updates.. Think SONY, or youll end like NOKIA…

Sony produces high quality smartphones, but for a short period of time.

If only I bought SGS1, then I was so happy of the updates.

Most of us really had to wait a long time for the ICS update and now you are saying that Jellybean will be rolled out in mid-Q1 for T and TX!? And how long will users of a Xperia S or a Xperia ion have to wait? Until July maybe?
Sorry Sony, I can understand that you won’t upgrade 2011 devices, but that we have to wait so long again while Android 4.2 is going to be released in one and a half weeks is really unfair.

I got the X10 and no update to ICS, the update to 2.3 come 1 years later. Now i want to buy the xperis S and sony said no jelly bean for 2011 smartphone. After that i think there will not have any next android update for the 2012 phone so i think i will buy a other phone. Sony suck with Android update. It’s a shame. I goin to look at samsung and HTC phons or wait for the next nexus.

“We were glad to provide the Android 4.0.4 upgrade for our 2011 Xperia portfolio across most markets and the majority of models but, after thorough evaluation, we have concluded they will not be upgraded beyond Ice Cream Sandwich.”

Such a big, epic, enormous FAIL! Not every is device is same to others, Arc S will benefit from a good JB update. This 4.0.4 (4.1.B.0.587) is poorer than the first release 4.0.
    Please Sony, WAKE UP!!!

Today JB 4.2 is announced and also the new Nexus 4 from LG for 300$ and it will be supported from Google at least for 3 years may be longer, last year I bought Xperia x10 mini for the same price and it stack on Android 2.1 because of the sh!t you say and I bought Xperia live With Walkman 6 Month ago and it will be stuck on the geek 4.0.4 because of the same sh!t.
Sonny it was nice to use your phone but I am sorry for the years I spent with you because I will sell my phone and get Nexus because Google respects it’s customers but you don’t!!!

Dear Sony! You’ve made so damn many phones for last several months, but, at the same time, you don’t provide normal support (upgrade to a new OS-version) for smartphones even from last year. You think, your clients must/will buy a new smartphone every year? If you don’t have an opportunity to provide basic service (I don’t even say “high service”), why are you producing so many new (similar) models? People always want to have the best, and have it quickly – it also includes OS-support. I guess, if you will keep following this way in future, your competitors from apple, Samsung, HTC etc. will be very happy and thankful to your company for supplying to them new clients.

I was thinking about this and still I am waiting for update to JellyBean for Xperia S.
Hope that it will be 4.2 as it is still JellyBean.
And decided to give to Sony corporation another chance, maybe you guys should think the same?
      Everybody makes mistakes.
It is true that Sony is always late with update, but take also into account that the quality of the OS is often better than other manufacturers.
I will wait and see what they are going to bring to my device.
      Do the same.
      Hope faster than later.
