Continuing Android software upgrades – Jelly Bean for 2012 Xperia™ smartphones

October 19, 2012 - 12:54 PM
711 comments

Hello everyone,

There’ve been a fair few questions here on the blog, our support forum and our social media channels, regarding upgrade plans for Android 4.1 (also known as Jelly Bean). Today we are happy to give you a bit of an update. :-)

Our latest models, Xperia T and Xperia TX are shipping across global markets as you read this post, and Xperia V is on the way shortly – these smartphones will begin to receive the upgrade to Jelly Bean from mid-Q1 2013.

Next up, we can confirm the global versions of Xperia S, Xperia acro S, Xperia ion, Xperia P, Xperia go and Xperia J will be upgraded to Android 4.1* – we will be back with detailed timings for these in due course.

We were glad to provide the Android 4.0.4 upgrade for our 2011 Xperia portfolio across most markets and the majority of models but, after thorough evaluation, we have concluded they will not be upgraded beyond Ice Cream Sandwich.

Beyond Ice Cream Sandwich we would not able to guarantee owners of these smartphones the user experience you expect and we demand. We will however, continue to support all these products with firmware maintenance releases.

As usual, the only official software update news will be found regularly here on the blog and we’ll keep you posted as soon as we have news to share.

If you have any questions, feel free to drop them below.

Will…

*Availability and rollout timing will vary by market and customer variants.

    Hi Sony

I must say that, I am sad, to hear that, there will be no JB update for XPERIA 2011. First of all, because, ICS is fail, by default. Second, because, 2011 is no so far in the history. I will garantee to you that we will get even better expiriance from our phones, than ICS. If you do, your job, well. But it seems that you want to left us, on this ICS sh*t. Battery/Ram drainer. You said, before, that there will be no 2.2 update for X8 because, it’s not dual touch. Well the open source developers, has shown that this is possible, and believe me on my X8, JB is running smoother than your stock 2.1 update. So, don’t blow dust in our eyes, and say LOUD AND CLEAR that you want to BUY your new, same looking, phones. It’s sad realy.

first of all i dont have any 2011 Xperia, im using X8 and Galaxy Ace Plus right now. so i dont really know the bug on ICS update for 2011 Xperia. yeah i admit it sony always late updating their phone and sometimes the phone doesn’t get any update like my X8.

now about JB on Nexus S. Nexus is google and android is google too, so it must be easy to update the phone considering google only have a few smartphone and tablet.

samsung, i always say “Samsung is fast deliver the update”, but my Ace Plus didn’t get any update and stuck on 2.3. samsung said it has a low hardware. low? even the galaxy chat has a lower hardware got JB update. although, ace plus is a new phone and has a good hardware (1Ghz single core and 512 RAM) and same hardware as Xperia J. so you’re lucky having an update at least an ICS update.

If Sony’s not supporting JB for the Arc S is it then possible to give us the unlucky ones with a locked bootloader the possibility to choose the version we want to use in our phone by unlocking the bootloader?
ICS works fine in my machine (faster and longer in between charges) but I’d like to give a go at JB. Using an Arc S LT18i

AGUANTA MOTOROLA RAZR !!! habra que optar por esta gamma que si tendra actualizacion JB

sony nos haz dado la espalda a tus consumidores

ArcS es una excelente opcion para JB nada les cuesta mantener contentos a sus consumidores

    Hi,

As said that 2011 models will not receive JB, but you can deliver it for all 2012 models, like Miro, U and Sola, we can wait a little longer.

So, will these models get JB? We can compromise some JB features…

Hi I am from sri lanka and i was a big fan of sony ericsson but as soon as sony introduced there NXT series, i urged my dad to get me a sony xperia s.. Which i would say is the best ever phone to be made. Seriously guys i think its much better than galaxy s3, i phone 5, HTC one x or even the upcoming Sony xperia T or Gx..
Its the only phone which has the highest pixel density. (342)..
It’s great with the ICS as i already got it in that version.. But would be amazing if it is upgraded to Jelly bean. Common Sony should others what u’ll got!!

How about the Xperia U, sola and miro? They all have decent specs(dual-core in U and sola), they should be more than capable to get the Jelly Bean update. Pls Sony, do something about this, you are lagging behind the likes of Samsung, which promised Jelly Bean updates for 15 of their models, from low to high end without any problems.

I don’t get why the users of those phones listed for the JB update are complaining… At least you get the update right?

Sony encouraged users to sign up for the ICS Beta testing last year. I did. And it was the worst decision I’ve ever made. I unlocked the bootloader of my Arc S using their official method, and now they start saying that the DRM keys are gone and your warranty is void. Fine. Then came the ICS update. Sony actually didn’t allow me to update! It said that my warranty was void and support was “over”. I had to manually flash the ICS Rom from XDA-Developers. And the Official ICS Rom turned out to be so laggy and unusable that I switched to custom ROMs – which is what I’m using now.

2011 Xperia users suffer a much worse fate than 2012 Xperia users. We’ve only gone through Gingerbread and ICS, and that’s it. Our phones were released just before Sony Ericsson was to change into Sony Mobile (thus the end of support). Yet early 2012 Xperia users (S,U,P) get Gingerbread, ICS, and now JB. Who cares about being the first users of Android to get JB, as long as it’s usable (not like 2011 ICS), I don’t see a problem. Patience is a virtue!

P.S. I don’t believe in the “maintenance updates” – they haven’t released an update for a long time.

Hi Will (if you read this),
I understand you (Sony) that Xperias 2011 won’t get Jelly Bean. These phones are already not selled so I agree with you. But Xperia Sola and U are relativly new phones (about 3/4 year old) and have got really good CPUs. So if you decided to give JB to Xperia Go which has 1 core CPU and really poor screen resolution (320×480) than I don’t know how are you thinking.

I had Xperia Mini (btw it’s an awesome tiny and powerful phone), but when I heard Xperias 2011 won’t get JB I decided to buy Sola. And you won’t release JB even for it. I hope you change your opinion quickly.

    Your disappointed fan
    Erik
