Continuing Android software upgrades – Jelly Bean for 2012 Xperia™ smartphones

October 19, 2012 - 12:54 PM
710 comments

Hello everyone,

There’ve been a fair few questions here on the blog, our support forum and our social media channels, regarding upgrade plans for Android 4.1 (also known as Jelly Bean). Today we are happy to give you a bit of an update. :-)

Our latest models, Xperia T and Xperia TX are shipping across global markets as you read this post, and Xperia V is on the way shortly – these smartphones will begin to receive the upgrade to Jelly Bean from mid-Q1 2013.

Next up, we can confirm the global versions of Xperia S, Xperia acro S, Xperia ion, Xperia P, Xperia go and Xperia J will be upgraded to Android 4.1* – we will be back with detailed timings for these in due course.

We were glad to provide the Android 4.0.4 upgrade for our 2011 Xperia portfolio across most markets and the majority of models but, after thorough evaluation, we have concluded they will not be upgraded beyond Ice Cream Sandwich.

Beyond Ice Cream Sandwich we would not able to guarantee owners of these smartphones the user experience you expect and we demand. We will however, continue to support all these products with firmware maintenance releases.

As usual, the only official software update news will be found regularly here on the blog and we’ll keep you posted as soon as we have news to share.

If you have any questions, feel free to drop them below.

Will…

*Availability and rollout timing will vary by market and customer variants.

I’m very sad to hear not update 2011 xperia to JB.

But if you will release JB ROM as Beta like xperia play ICS update, I’m very very happy!!

Wow Sony this is really, really poor.

Firstly a Mid Q1 2013 update is far too late. Phones coming out now – T, TX, V, J should already have Jelly Bean – either out of the box or a zero day update. The other phones released this year should already be receiving their updates. To get updates 8 months after Jelly Bean’s release is rubbish.

Secondly to rule out all 2011 phones is absolutely shocking. There are phones released in 2011 that are more than capable of running Jelly Bean – there can be no other reason for not updating them than lazyness and totally contempt for your paying customers.

Perhaps in the future you should stop making so many phones every year and concentrate on 2 or 3 top quality models – The 10 or 15 you have released this year is far too many and makes you look cheap and not the quality brand you could be.

After the debacle that was the X10 upgrade you had slowly started to win your customers back and were building a nice reputation for yourselves in the Android community as a company that cares for it’s customers and cares to update it’s phones. I feel that this update program is a kick in the teeth for those customers that stayed with you and the new customers you have won over.

Poor move Sony and such a shame.

i could not agree more. I was always a fan of SE, had the same issues with my x10 mini pro, then my mini pro and now my arc s. My friends on Samsung galaxy 2 keep getting updates, but sony only updates the phones you bought just a few months ago, and of course you know that there will be no more updates for you. I sent my arc s back to sony to be downgraded to gingerbread. Hey sony, i would prefer staying to your 2.3 update, when SONY ERICSSON seemed to be able to provide decent roms for their customers. Your ICS is shit and you know this, but you just hope that we complain and shut up. I find it quite funny that my arc s with 1.4 processor will not get an update due to stability nonsenses, as you SONY say, but in the same time the xperia j with a 1.0 processor will get the update!!! How stupid you think your customers really are sony? but i would suggest sony fans not to complain anymore and just go for samsung. End of story. F*ck u Sony. Simple as this

I have Xperia Go and have not even got ICS jet, allow me to be skeptical of this news… and the buggy version that it’s ships with (2.3.7), loses WiFi 3 – 4 times a day, so you have to reboot or turn on / off fligt mode to get it to work again … sigh …

When i first saw it on NU.nl i thought it was misinterpreted, but now i see it is not. I am really dissapointed (softly expressed), i’m an Experia Arc user and was provided with a Buggy update towards ICS and am waiting for the issues to be resolved. However you now let us down by no longer supporting our devices from only 1 year old…… shame on you Sony. I hope you reconsider this statement and start serving your customers and do a bit of damage repair..

remember it’s no only about selling expensive devices, but also to provide support for reasonable period of time an this is not less then a year!!!

Which part of Google asking members of the Open Handset Alliance to give 18 month Android support has to be evaluated? Why did Sony join the alliance then? To keep a seat warm?

Are you admitting that the hardware team designed a device without updates in mind, eventhough as members of the OHA Sony gets early releases of Android?

You are fragmenting Android, you don’t deserve to be in the OHA.

why can’t sony just give the latest software updates and let their customers decide if they want to upgrade their phone or not? we don’t need evaluations. it’s our phone, it’s our decision, we are the one who will live with the performance of our phone after the update.

Hi Fiz, As we are making the Jelly Bean upgrade available to a considerable portion of our 2012 portfolio it takes a bit longer thank had we done it only for particular models at the high end. Our priority has and always will be, to ensure we deliver the best possible software user experience before we release it to consumers.

    Hello Mr. WILL sir

This is very good news that at last sony agreed that it WILL release JB updates finally to the models mentioned above and working on other models as well. Thanks you very much for this.

The BAD news is we need to wait for JB, the hottest beautiful and most popular software update for another 5 to 6 months by the time sony smarrphone receive JB it will be out of date, where as other brands might be receiving next version software ( KEY LIME PIE ). Sony lovers WILL be more disappointed here.

Consider this and release JB in a month or two.

    Thanks

    SONY,
could you please explain me why are you so late on the market by stating that you are going to release JellyBean in 2013? Q1 fo newest T,V models, and Xperia S when? Q2 or Q3 2013?? Maybe 2014? In this time Android 4.1 will be simply outdated and other manufacturers will be working on 4.2 since a few months already and be close to release new software from Google! I mean successor to Android 4.2 :/

What takes you so long with these OS updates??? Why other brands can be so much faster and already have JellyBean like Samsung Galaxy S3 and other who are releasing it right NOW like HTC and you are stating that you will bring it half a year later or about ONE YEAR LATER ??!!

For God’s sake? What does it means ???

I am a Xperia S owner, but I think that will change in a very short time.
Take a Steve Jobs book into your hand. He was stating that the customer satisfaction and loyalty is the most important. And now, with this post you are about to loose loyalty of at least one of your loyal customers from the beginning. You are not making me proud user of Xperia S device. Your 2012 fagship.

I was about to abandon Sony brand while was sticked with Arc S, but now with Xperia S I am only closer to take this decision… If you will not bring it faster (work with FreeXperia folks or Google directly) – I am switching to HTC or Samsung and going to forget Sony brand. And as all we can see I am not the only one disappointed with OS updates, it’s timing especially.

At least help FreeXperia devs because they are very close to deliver complete and stable software. They need only Sony applications (Walkman, photo gallery, weather widget etc.) and fix some issues like 3G, wifi, camera etc. If you don’t want to loose your market simply do this. If not, even you will deliver your 5 inch full HD screen I am not going to trust you again.I will not be interested because your story is repeating again. First with X10, later with Arc S and now with Xperia S. I don’t want to be the last with OS / about a year after the others… If such companies like Samsung or HTC can deliver it already, I believe (yet) that Sony can as well.

And please improve your communication with the client ans answer my questions (Will, Ant or whoever else):

    1. What takes Sony so long with OS updates (since years) and why other brands can be so much faster with it.
    2. Can Sony help FreeXperia team and work directly with Google to deliver android 4.1 for Xperia S / other 2012 devices?
    3. I know that there was some kind of a project that Google was about to deliver JellyBean for Xperia S, what’s the progress?

    Regards.

I agree on the disappointment, and I want to add in all fairness that Sony supports the developers of custom ROM’s by providing technical information. This means that whilst Sony won’t provide their newest user experience on older phones they facilitate the creation of newest OS ROM’s for these devices. For example, you can install JB in a 2010 X10 Mini Pro from the MiniCyanogen project.

Very dissapointing news, my Xperia S it´s may last Sony Phone, in Q1 2013 will be a new version of Android I´m sure. It´s a shame than the FreeXperia boys are doing a better job than you, ICS and JB are almost the same It´s incredible yo can do the job faster. Anyway thanks for my last Sony Phone
