Continuing Android software upgrades – Jelly Bean for 2012 Xperia™ smartphones

October 19, 2012 - 12:54 PM
711 comments

Hello everyone,

There’ve been a fair few questions here on the blog, our support forum and our social media channels, regarding upgrade plans for Android 4.1 (also known as Jelly Bean). Today we are happy to give you a bit of an update. :-)

Our latest models, Xperia T and Xperia TX are shipping across global markets as you read this post, and Xperia V is on the way shortly – these smartphones will begin to receive the upgrade to Jelly Bean from mid-Q1 2013.

Next up, we can confirm the global versions of Xperia S, Xperia acro S, Xperia ion, Xperia P, Xperia go and Xperia J will be upgraded to Android 4.1* – we will be back with detailed timings for these in due course.

We were glad to provide the Android 4.0.4 upgrade for our 2011 Xperia portfolio across most markets and the majority of models but, after thorough evaluation, we have concluded they will not be upgraded beyond Ice Cream Sandwich.

Beyond Ice Cream Sandwich we would not able to guarantee owners of these smartphones the user experience you expect and we demand. We will however, continue to support all these products with firmware maintenance releases.

As usual, the only official software update news will be found regularly here on the blog and we’ll keep you posted as soon as we have news to share.

If you have any questions, feel free to drop them below.

Will…

*Availability and rollout timing will vary by market and customer variants.

I recently didn’t expect to get JB update for my 2011 device but one thing I really want Sony to support is to release some important libs such as Camera lib for some powerful developer in order to make some custom rom for us. I hope Sony will get this point and kindly accept my wish.

This is really disappointing for new buyers of last year’s batch of Xperias. I just bought a Xperia Arc S, and it has more powerful components than the Xperia J. But still, Sony chose not to update this particular model. I was hoping that the Jelly Bean update will fix the occasional hiccups I experience on my phone after updating to ICS. This is really more on marketing than technical issues. How disappointing Sony.

I suggest to Sony that rather than wasting soooooooooooo much time on Jelly Bean, they should start working on Key Lime Pie to bring KLP to its customer ahead of competitors. Its the only way for Sony to lead the market and win customers, if they wish to. Otherwise, their lagging software updates would lose their customers. Hope Sony considers this suggestion.

    Hi Sony Team,
Read this fully and carefully and then decide what you guys have to do. Sony is releasing so many products and that too they are good. I thought Sony was heading in the right direction until this news came.
I am owner of so many number of Sony products. Even if Sony products were behind competitors, I bought solely because of brand loyalty. I own an Xperia Arc n my sister owns a Xperia Active. Totally I have owned around 10 Sony phones, just PHONES excluding the camera, TV n various other products. When I buy a Sony product there is level of trust. That’s completely gone! :(
Samsung has agreed to update Ace Plus n other low end models to JB skipping ICS. Those phones are of mid n low end. I had a choice of Samsung S2 and Sony Xperia Arc. I bought Xperia Arc despite being single core n S2 being available at the same price. Samsung has agreed to update S2 to JB and we “LOYAL” customers are fu*ked brutally by Sony. There are atleast 15 people who bought Sony phones because of me.
Now that you’ve agreed NOT to update 2011 models to JB, I am fed up with this brand loyalty where only the fans are loyal and brand company JUST DOESN’T SEEM TO CARE!!
What dreams I had of Sony becoming the leader again overtaking Samsung n Apple. Everything in vain. What to do! No I think even my this comment would not have been seen by Sony team. It was an emotional attachment and you guys don’t understand the value of brand loyalty.
Thank you for serving me an unstable ICS update. I wish good luck for you guys. This is MY LAST EVER SONY PRODUCT. Thank you and good bye guys.

Hey SONY, common, give us Jelly Bean on Xperia Ray, your ICS is still buggy!
if you continue like this people will not purchase SONY phones anymore, but only NEXUS models or phones from vendors like HTC and SAMSUNG that acctually updates their phones!

    sony sucks
xperia 2011 will not get JB even though some of them have better spec. than xperia J
even if you don’t want to support them continusely, you should hive them 3.0.X kernel
    for 100% ICS
in conclusion, forever blacklisted sony’s phone

    QUOTED:

I believe that Xperia U is still under evaluation? As it’s not one of those 2011 Sony phones..
If Sony won’t give JB update for Xperia U, that would make I hate Sony forever.. =.=
Xperia U got better specs than Xperia J, so I just don’t and won’t understand any reasons to not give it a proper updates..
I just bought my Xperia U couple weeks ago..
    I love my Xperia U..!! :’(
Don’t break our hearts please, Sony..

    Dear Will and Anthony,

I have few questions. First of all, how a phone like the first nexus phone, that has the same specs of our phone, got the JB and our Xperias 2011 not? Try to answer, because if you compare, the first nexus phone that received Jelly Bean, has the same specs of my Xperia neo.

Why Sony still delivered a laggy ICS for us, even though after the second firmware release?

Why companies that uses android system can’t deliver a reasonable answer for the updates?

Why companies like Apple, upgrade even a 2009 year phone to the last IOS, and you Sony, that WAS praised as the best company for many comunitites can’t even update a phone that was released last year?

Will be any program like motorola is doing, to give 100 USD$ back, to owners of the phone that will not upgrade, or are you going to leave us behind? I’m not telling about weak updtaes like firmware .587, I’m talking about real updates, like JB.

That is all I need to answer. No answer, as a laywer I will sue Sony in my country to get refund, based in 18 months of upgrade. Give me a reasonable answer.

I own 2 phones, xperia mini pro and live with walkman, I’ve bought two cause I loved Sony. But now you just lost your customer, and I’ll make sure that my relatives and friends won’t get in such trap, my xperia mini pro simfree si 1249-4852 wasn’t even updated To ics. This is all joke now, you don’t want want to support 2011 phones, we users won’t support Sony by buying 2012 phones. That’s it, I’m done with this crap. No matter what we say here, our comments will be just comments, only sale numbers will tell, and it won’t be any from my side. Thanks a lot sony, if its your policy to create bunch of same phones and drop your advocate customers than we think in different way. Goodbye

I was afraid this would happen. I’m an xperia pro user. Okay, you won’t be giving the 2011 xperias a jelly bean update, but will you please give an ICS update which would resolve ALL the issues we are experiencing in your ICS update? ESPECIALLY THE LAG ISSUE. I have seen 4.0 on miro, and it’s smooth, considering it has lower specs than my xperia pro!

“We will however, continue to support all these products with firmware maintenance releases.”

Don’t make me laugh. You mean like you did for Xperia PLAY users? after not receiving the ICS update with the other 2011 devices, there have been a grand total of ZERO software updates of any kind for this device.

Be under no illusion people; 2011 devices have been all but abandoned. Its not in Sonys financial interest (and we all know what a dire state that’s in right now) to provide software updates to older devices, so they won’t.

confused!! I am still not able to updat to ICS with my Xperia Sola.( or, at least, i cannot update through SUS nor PCC) although it says so on your website: Available. SI-1262-1032
So talking about JB seems to me lightyears away.
Main reason for buying Sola is promised update and floating touch with gloves. And guess what, it is getting winter pretty soon here.

Please, take your time and release it, I do not care when you will give, but just give :)

Sony, this is not the right way to get back to the smartphone game, if you want to get back to it.

I will wait for the ETA announcement but I am more inclined to sell my Xperia S. Because it does not offer me drastically different user experience than other manufacturers. The PlayStation Mobile is a joke: no game title that entices me. Now with this slow update announcement of an announcement of an ETA.

Maybe I will buy the next Nexus.

Thank you, Sony for that deceived me and promised to support the entire series of 2011 to the end of 2012. You do not even bother to make a normal ics. He also lags and was on the old kernel. I do not understand why you are surprised that you are suffering losses. As already recommended, thank the developers hire workers from Free Xperia Project. Why your campaign work such lazy people? You do not even update the flagship 2011. EXCELLENT! Do not be surprised that sales are down and people go to other producers. I’m not asking you about android 4.2. I’m just asking to update smartphones in 2011 to 4.1. I said everything. I love Sony but it seems I was, I soon parted with Sony.

Latest ST18i firmware was really buggy, led doesn’t work, home lag.
You are not capable of optimizing that, in xda are dev that optimazing ICS and it’s works now, without lag, without bug, led works.

“Beyond Ice Cream Sandwich we would not able to guarantee owners of these smartphones the user experience you expect and we demand”

You couldn’t guarantee owners of 2011 Xperias that ICS would have the user experience we expect, yet you released that with a huge caveat that it might be slow. Why are you treating Jelly Bean differently?

“We will however, continue to support all these products with firmware maintenance releases.”

Great. Honestly, I couldn’t care less about Jelly Bean if you will fix the big issues with ICS – namely, LED, WiFi Hotspot, and calendar events missing titles. Fix those as well as the instability of ICS (multiple random reboots) and I’ll be happy with that (along with many others I suspect).

The Major fault is Sony doesn’t look for what customer needs. Most brands are moving their older devices to jelly bean and many of them are low on spec than arc s,neo v.this means they are not working as other companies.we customers wont want you anymore.for sony its just a beginning but for customers like me its a end..goodbye sony seriously no more mobile devices will be brought from sony.
