5 cool things about… your Xperia™ smartphone camera

November 2, 2012 - 2:46 PM
22 comments

Happy Friday guys -

Here’s something that could be useful this weekend – five cool things you might not have known about the camera on your Sony Xperia smartphone.

Bear in mind, these are my personal choices in no particular order – so feel free to let us know your own favourites in the comments below :)

Sony Xperia Smartphones are packed with the best of Sony Camera technology; all of Sony’s heritage and expertise locked and loaded in your hand – so, without further ado…

- Fast capture – a neat feature; even when in standby, by pressing the camera key, you can go from sleep to snap in a little over a second. Not one for artistic shots, but great for capturing action or even mishaps and misfortune ;)

- Customisable menu – simply hit settings on your camera interface screen and then drag and drop your preferred setting into the viewfinder window. One for the budding professionals or perfectionists amongst us giving you easy access to all your favourite functions!

- Different capture modes (Normal, Scene recognition, Sweep Panorama, Sweep Multi Angle and 3D Sweep Panorama). This is sweet and something that’s a hallmark of Sony Digital Cybershot cameras. In normal – you pick the scene settings manually and with scene recognition – let your Xperia smartphone take a guess, it’s no slouch! Then there’s also…

- Sweep Panorama, Sweep Multi-angle and 3D Sweep panorama  - sweep panorama has featured in Xperia smartphones for longer than I dare to remember! We’re always looking to evolve this functionality – 3D Sweep Panorama lets you create panoramic photos that can be viewed in either 2D or 3D on a compatible TV. Then, my favourite is Sweep Multi-angle; it lets you create an almost lenticular image that gives the impression of depth – sweet huh?

- Sensory perception – your Xperia smartphone camera features an Exmor R BSI CMOS sensor. To geek out for a minute, the sensor uses a back illuminated sensor which means the light receptor isn’t blocked by the wire circuit – which then means light falls directly onto the receptive areas of the sensor – which means more light – which means less noise, even in low light – which means happier snapping in all light conditions!

Have a great weekend,

Ant.

I own a Xperia S but the image quality is not good as the like of N8, Galxy S3 and S2. Images have lot of noise even i tried various settings and auto scene recognition. i heard and saw some reviews in tech websites that all the new Sony branded mobiles have this problem and hope Sony will look on this seriously. The fast capturing, Sweep panorama functions are good.

Yeah, I’ve found that the camera on my Xperia S wasn’t as good as I was expecting… Good, but not great.

The fast capture is handy and when it works, the Sweep Panorama/3D Panorama is absolutely brilliant, but I find that my Xperia S struggles when it’s set to the highest resolution (12MP)… A problem my wife also has with the same smartphone.

Sony have launched 15 mobiles in a short span of 9 months including 3 flagship models. but all these phones failed in real life performance comparing to other brands even though they are great looking phones than other brands. Sony is now good in designing good looking phones by including features like durability,MEGAPIXEL and great interface. problem with Sony is the long delay in launching the phone in market after its announcing and by the time the hardware will be outdated. Now my phone Xperia S, which was the first flagship model of Sony replaced by Xperia T and it will soon replaced by some other phones rumoured in tech websites which have quad core processors. after 7 months use of my phone I really feel that my phone need to upgrade but couldn’t find a quad core smartphone from Sony yet where all other company started selling of such phones. I was ready to buy Xperia V when it was announced but the long delay forced me to take U-Turn and I am now waiting again for a phone from Sony which should come with a new generation hardware plus features like IP certification and great camera with fast capture.if the current Sony customers can have a option to upgrade their phone to new models will be a great advantage as Microsoft did in Windows 8.

    Dir Sir,
unfortunatelly your article it’s only an advertisement…and not the reallity because as owner of xperia s the quality of photos is for a mobile without these spects. and a very lower price. In case of outdoor photos when there is clouds or under a shodow the photos are very dark and i must have to use photoshop to fix them.
Unfortunatelly there are so many problems with xperia s as wi-fi connections problems and more and more. So if you give me one for free a don’t want to have it.
Sorry Sony, but when i have spend a lot for money i can’t say something more gently for you.
Please do something right now… emergency UPDATE…asap
    Best regards

Sony, blocking ability (IPs) to log in to this page is a bad move and not welcomed idea… You shouldn’t be afraid of criticism, it should be constructive for you. I mean all the feedback – the good one and the bad one.

However, what I can say, your cameras in the smartphones was always one of the best and one of the feature I was considering of buying your smartphones.
    You should continue with it.

I would be interested in your upcoming 2013 flagship if it could be like this:

-1080p IPS+ screen with white magic technology (not sure if 5 inch, if it is not too much, if 5 inch – the frame should be very thin not making the device huge)
    - screen should be oleophobic!!! Cleaning the screen from fingerprints is annoying.
    - 2GB of RAM, maybe 3GB, the rumors are saying that Samsung Galaxy S4 is going to have 3GB.
    - Quad Snapdragon S4 pro clocked at 2GHz – again I believe that galaxy S4 is going to be 2GHz device.
    - Big battery and as well bigger camera lens / smaller shutter – currently Xperia S has 2.4 while HTC One X has 2.0 shutter – smaller = better. I don’t care as much about thinnest device, I just would welcome bigger battery and better/ bigger camera without noise.
    - camera shoud be cybershot with xenon flash with automatic protection (from dust) like K850 had long time ago.
    - The newest Android OS
    - stereo speakers
    - 2MPx front facing camera
    - design. Personally the best design I ever saw in mobile market was W980 phone. It was just awesome, I would like to know the name of a men who created it. Iconic style like Xperia S has is awesome. Maybe with orange leds like W980 had instead of white one?
-water resistance when it rain outside :) – I think that there is no any other device who has this feature.
    - dedicated camera button! It is still very important for me and the reason why I decided to skip Xperia V.
    - Very fast updates – for at least 18months.
    - free wisepilot without ads, like the Nokia has.
    - updated Timescape – the current version is not as useful and simply ugly.

Even if I said that I am not going to buy your phone anymore I just decided to wait for your reaction and see what you are going to do with Xperia S update and what device you are going to present in upcoming year.

I was trying to play with Galaxy S3 but its OS is simply too ugly for me :(
The only one other brand I would consider at this time is Nexus device and its wonderful low price.

Try to deliver smaller amound of devices – like 3 or max 4 – and focus on them, your customers don’t like to feel abandoned.

Please deliver my post to the devs and all people working on new devices and JellyBean updates.
    Thank you.

I forgot 32GB of internal storage!
It was the other reason why I choose Xperia S, 8 or 16GB it far too small for me! Again XperiaV doesn’t have 32GB, I don’t like to play with additional SD cards.

Also try better headphones out of the box and do not compress the pictures as much ;)

    Hey Mr.Marcin Podsiadly.
To tell you the truth they won’t answer you at all and also they won’t even bother themselves to read what you have wrote.
This is the last time I will go to the Xperia Blog.
They didn’t even bother themselves to answer my basic question which I asked them for 3 times before. (will Xperia SL going to have a JB update)
Believe me they won’t listen nor read
You may sort the comments on this page by popularity.
    Which popularity ????
they deleted the removed the Like/Dislike from every comment because people all liked the critical comments.
I really wanted to buy Sony Xperia SL or Xperia Ion.
I just wasn’t sure but that is humiliating to us and rude from Sony to not answering us.
Sony doesn’t bother themselves to make new updates neither listen to us (or reading)
Bye Bye Sony I have dignity and I don’t want to buy a phone from yours.

Before I go I want to say to ANT
Why are you asking us ” ” when you don’t answer our questions?
also However I like most the fast capture, 3d sweep and multi angel shots.
With respect to the people working on the hardware section
I will leave sony because of the silent costumer care section and slow software section.

Hey Beni – thanks for stopping by,

We recognise and listen to every comment – we can’t get to each and every one, as we’re only human!

Xperia SL will receive Jelly Bean – we’ll be back with more detailed timings in due course.

        Hello Ant,
can you please confirm that camera in upcoming 2013 flagship Xperia codenamed Youga will be only 12MPx? :(
        Why not 13MPx ?
I would be interested in buying this device and suggest it to my family and coleagues, but I would like to take 16:9 photos in full resolution, otherwise there are black borders on the left and right sides and I have to use 9MPx to get 16:9 :( :( :(

It is very important. As well as waterproof and dedicated camera button, the other specs looks just great in upcoming flagship :)

I saw the pics of Yuga, (it leaks time ago), it is not looking good at this point but still I believe it is only prototype.

        Please answer if possible.

        Thank you.

Hello Thank you for answering me at last
        I didn’t expect that so.
However the only reason that let me enter the blog (even so I said I won’t) was that I heard that sony websites was attacked by hackers several times, so maybe that is why you couldn’t answer, trying to evaluate your website security.
I actually though the answer was going to be NO and maybe instead of saying no you kept silence or you didn’t read it at all.
However thank you for the reply and I apologize if I hurt anybody by my angry talking especially that you probably have a reason not to answer.
But still I think you are somehow avoiding criticism by deleting the like/dislike button or the popularity of a comment.

We’re on a new blog system now with a different comment mechanic; let me it out and see if we can bring the like/dislike functionality back!

    Hi Anthony & product team,
I read about the news from Sony’s Sales Chief Dennis Van Schie, speaking to the media about the next flagship to directly compete with Apple & Samsung’s flagship. I think this is an exciting news, and I can’t wait to see what’s in stored for us in 2013. Speaking about releasing a direct competitor to these flagships is a bold move, as many factors involved, when LG & HTC does released a high end phone with specifications that are comparable and somehow exceeded the top selling phone’s. Yet, they failed to capture the market share as well. In my opinion, releasing a high end phone isn’t the only factor, as there’s some points I think is obvious and should take into account for:
    - Cust’s impression about the brand’s ability to mass release a phone from the announcement time to retail time. It shouldn’t be delayed for more than 2 months (main reason)
    - Cust’s confidence towards after sales benefits, like releasing major OS that includes some Sony’s current flagship features to older models to keep older models exciting. Again, it shouldn’t be released for more than 3 months after a new android OS announcement. With so many models at hand, I trust that the developer’s are struggling to keep up with the fast phase.
    - Cust’s impression of how long can a model lasts the excitement. Iphone 5 & Galaxy S3 can last for at least a year, until 3 to 4 other brands have the features to catch up with.
    ——-
I think those 3 reasons are already an extreme challenge.
While relying on Adroid platform to keep the company afloat, I’d suggest your company put full force into the speed of PS Vita OS’s Apps eco system, as that’ll be a major push to release a true flagship smartphone, or perhaps playstation phone in the near future.
Thank you for listening. I hope the product team does read this.
    Regards,

I’m sorry to say but the camera is far for being what you describe. The photos are low level and with a lot of noise and colour issues. They look good only on the little screen of Xperia U for example. My old K610i made better pictures. And with flash on it gets worse. And I’m not the only one unhappy with the camera. The camera was one of the reasons when I bought Xperia U. It won’t happen again. Here is one of my many examples:
