Update on Sony software upgrades, including uplift to Jelly Bean Android 4.1 for 2012 Xperia™ smartphones

December 17, 2012 - 9:00 AM
209 comments

Hello everyone,

We’d like to bring you up-to-speed with the latest in our Android 4.1 rollout scheduling.

First up, the upgrade plans* for Xperia T, Xperia TX and Xperia V are progressing as planned – these smartphones will start to receive Jelly Bean during February and March.

Next up, Xperia P, Xperia J and Xperia go will be upgraded from the end of March. Then Xperia S, Xperia SL, Xperia ion and Xperia acro S will follow in the subsequent weeks.

We’re particularly excited about the Sony Xperia Jelly Bean features and functionality – we look forward to bringing you more information on this in the New Year.

The decision has been taken not to upgrade Xperia U, Xperia miro, Xperia tipo, and Xperia sola beyond Android 4.0.

Feel free to drop a comment below, and keep your eyes on the blog as we’ll be sharing more detailed news/updates as soon as we can.

*Availability and rollout timing will vary by market and customer variants

How about the Xperia E and E dual? Since they are new models, will they be eligible for update to 4.1 too?

Here is the quote about the Xperia U, sola, miro and tipo:
“The quality of Xperia’s software experience is dependent on a number of factors including: screen resolution, hardware platform and RAM. In the case of Xperia go, this combination came together in a way that meant the user experience running JB was not adversely affected.
Unfortunately, in the case of Xperia tipo, Xperia miro, Xperia U and Xperia sola this wasn’t the case – so we made the decision to keep them on Ice Cream Sandwich.”

In case you are wondering how is that the low-end Xperia J is getting the Jelly Bean update, while the dual-core U and sola aren’t – despite Sony didn’t make any statement, we guess the GPU is the one to blame.
All three phones have 512MB of RAM, but the Adreno 200 GPU on the Xperia J uses far less RAM than the Mali-400 inside the Xperia U and sola. We also know that Project Butter needs more GPU power than what the ICS UI. And the insufficient RAM due to GPU usage is probably the reason why these phones won’t be getting to taste Jelly Bean.

I didn’t find much difference between xperia go & xperia u in hardware configuration except screen resolution. I think its not a big issue. Then why not Xperia U for jelly bean update? Please state me if you know the possible reason?

This means you can get Jelly Bean on friday or you have to wait 8 weeks.
Its strange that Sony can not give us a more spesific date for this update…

I’m an avid support of sony products like its cameras and phones especially in xperia. I have always trusted in your quality that your products (except it’s durability). However there is one thing I would like to express: Since samsung had already pushed out it’s updates on their even (older model of phones), I’m wondering when will my xperia get my update. I can’t believe I have to wait so long just to update my sony product. Sony I officially lost my faith for you. Switching to a samsung s4 instead of a xperia z instead.

Why not upgrade Xperia U to Android 4.1 JellyBean, it’s got a Dual Core processor compared to other ones with Single Core to get a 4.1 update. Can Sony please provide a detailed explanation as to why we can’t get an update. Since ICS 4.0 update everything went bad in the phone, i knew 4 persons using Xperia U and we all rather switch back to Android 2.3.7 Gingerbread than to the so called update that only ruins it all.

    This is so disappointing SONY.

Update your Xperia V by computer will be much faster as it will have a chance of update fail by updating your Xperia V by the phone. I recommend you to update your phone by computer as it will be much faster and easier.
