More and more companies are recognizing that they have a responsibility to minimize the impact that their products and operations have on our climate. So do we at Sony Ericsson. In 2008 we decided to revise or climate related goals so that they not only include emission reductions from Sony Ericsson’s own operation, of which we are in control. Now they also include emissions from life cycle stages beyond Sony Ericsson’s sphere of influence. To reach that goal, we need to collaborate with our suppliers and customers, and influence them to also make reductions. Working together, both upstream and downstream the supply chain, is the only way if you substantially want to reduce the environmental impact of a product.

Emission distribution on mobile phone life cycle stages

So, Sony Ericsson’s goals are to:

  • By 2015 reduce the total greenhouse gas emissions from Sony Ericsson’s internal activities with 20 % (base year 2008)
  • By 2015 reduce the total greenhouse gas emissions from the full life cycle of Sony Ericsson’s products with 15% (base year 2008)

Are you curious about how we are doing so far? Since our goals are based on 2008 years performance, 2009 is the first year with a full follow up of these targets. The results will be communicated in our Sustainability report which is to be released very soon.

So stay tuned, and I’ll keep you updated on how Sony Ericsson is performing when it comes to cutting carbon!

    Maria,

I am currently writing a paper on Sony Ericsson and your CSR activities, and I just sent an email to the Sustainability Department with a number of questions that I would appreciate to have answered. The paper that I am writing corresponds to 50% of the assessment for one of my courses that I’m enrolled in at the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. Both Ericsson’s CSR report and your blog says that S.E’s Sustainability Report will be released soon. Do you know exactly what date it is being released? Is there any other way I can get my hands on that report before it is published?

If you personally want to/have the time to answer the questions that I posted on ‘sustainability@sonyericsson.com’, that would be great. I will send a copy of that very email as a comment to your blog after sending this one.

    Thank you! / Tack!

    Hi Johan,
thanks for your e-mail, we just recieved it in our sustainability inbox. I will forward it to our CSR expert and hopefully he’ll be able to help you with your questions. Regarding the Sustainability report, it is planned for the 2nd week of June. So given that everything works according to plan, you shouldn’t have to wait very much longer.

    Good luck with your paper!

I think it is personally fantastic to see a company who has actually set itself strict targets to reduce its manufacturing carbon footprint within a specific time frame – A SMART target it is, and one which other businesses should follow.

It is great to see such a high profile business like SE doing this first, all credit to you.

    Regards,
