Your Xperia Questions Answered

This blog is coming up to being two weeks old and we’ve received a fair few questions in the comments sections. Yesterday I went through the questions with Ramanath and we sorted out answers to those which are most commonly asked. So here goes:

• Launch dates / networks etc… It’s really not up to us to say which networks will be carrying the phone and when. They all have their own business plans and their own plans for the launch etc…. so we’re not going to get involved in speculation as to who will carry it and when. The launch date of the 30th is the day we ship the phones to the networks and there will, most likely be some lead time before it appears. (though I’d expect to see it on some shelves in early October.)

• Is there an accelerometer? No.

• Will there be 30 fps video recording? Yes ,as promised.

• Will there be one or two versions of the phone? There will be two versions, one for the US and one for everyone else.

• Is there any difference between the black and silver versions of the phone? Yes, one is black, the other is silver. Other than that, no they are the same phone.

• How big is the battery and how long does it last? The battery is a 1500mAh unit (about 10% bigger than, for example, the touch pro). How long it lasts depends very much on how much you use the phone. Even in the worst case scenario, with all the features turned on (GPS, internet, applications etc…) and heavy usage, it will last all day and need to be charged over night.

• Questions re: the speed etc… The device has a graphics accelerator, a 528 Mhz processor and 384 megs of ram (so it should be as fast as anything else that is out there.)

That’s it for the moment, keep the questions coming and we’ll keep trying to answer them. We should also take this opportunity to thank all of you who have been involved so far. Since we launched on the 15th we’ve had more than 9,000 unique visitors and 28,000 page views (which is more than we hoped for). The opportunity to engage in a conversation with all of you is hugely important to us and we genuinely appreciate your involvement in the site.

Thanks again,

Sam Oakley and Ramanath Bhat

Thanks for the update, checking every day to little news was getting a bit frustrating!

As far as new requests; some new video of the video recording features, of someone using the keyboard (any sticky keys etc?), and while in Opera flipping screen orientation would be great! Did there end up a separate button for changing screen orientation of do we have to map a key?

    Thanks again!

Thanks for that clarification Sam and Ramanath.

    It is greatly appreciated.

However, to address the two versions of the phone,

In what ways is the US version different from the other one?

i.e. in speculation it has been said that the US one has 24fps video recording instead of 30fps and plays in QVGA 320×240 and not VGA 640×480.

    Thanks again.

Hi and thank you for your great weblog
    Please answer my 2 questions.
1- Does X1 support GPS or it just supports a-GPS?
2- Why X1 does not support SE Bluetooth watches such as MBW-150?
    Regards

Really great to see that you are answering people’s questions first of all. I can only hope that this continues after the launch of the phone and obviously for the length of time that the phone is being sold.

Anyway, with respect to the lack of an accelerometer, I do hope it is convenient to assign a button to switch the orientation of the screen, without having to sacrifice usability in some other program or interface. Because I have no idea really how many buttons are on the phone in total except for the ones on the front. If you are using those to scroll web pages and return to the home screen for example, I would be curious to see if other buttons can be allocated to that specific function of screen rotation.

I had an ipaq 4700 and even thinking back, I have no idea what I would use an accelerometer for but it would have been nice of course to have the option of turning it on or off.

It is also unfortunate that there are two versions of the phone. So I can only hope that the specs are extremely similar except for a difference in frequencies maybe. Having said that however and not knowing much about cellphone frequencies and their inner workings, I do find it strange that you could not have put all the required frequencies in one phone and simply have one model. But as I said, I don’t know enough about the technology from such a perspective.

Finally, it is unfortunate that you have no idea which networks would launch it. True I cannot blame Sony for this at all but I was at Verizon in the U.S. and was asking them “about a non Sony phone” which has been on the Internet for 3 or 4 months now. The manufacturer said they will be releasing the phone with Verizon around the end of October and even after going into the Verizon store and asking about the phone, the employees and store manager had no idea what I was talking about. So it is really frustrating at times when people who work in the industry, do not seem to keep up with what is going on or don’t really care.

To the editors: If I cannot put Verizon in the post, please remove it and simply put “a US cell provider” or something like that.

As always, people ask the same questions over and over. Look around, the answres are out there youre just to lazy to search for them! Anyway, I have a question that I have not seen anywhere before and that I really would like answered: Is the screen in hardened glass or not?

Is there another way to change the screen in landscape-mode, except sliding out the keyboard? Is thera a dedicated button or something like that? I haven’t seen it anymore in any vid, but in a early version, there was this key: http://sirnobax.googlepages.com/knopje.jpg

I was wondering if anyone knows how much the phone will cost here in the United States. I’m not expecting it to come with a light price tag with all the stuff everyone’s drooling about but if it’s to much I’m not even waiting for the release.

How quick is the response time of the screen while in camera or video mode?

For example, a digital camera will show a realistic image on the lcd as you move around, while many mobile devices will show a blurry or streaky image while panning around, especially in low light situations.

A video from the user’s perspective of the X1 taking pictures and video would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks!

Will there be a one-stop shop for additional panels? It would be nice to not have to trawl the web for panels, and to be able to see a catalogue of them – not having to download them to the phone to see what they’re like would be good.
