The guys over at PointUI have just released the beta version of their new home-2 software.

I only installed it this morning but I’ve already been won over. It is intuitively laid out, easy to navigate and slickly rendered. The beta has quite limited functionality but it’s a great taster of what’s to come when they release the pro version, and perfectly useable in it’s own right. It’s free and available for download in panel form from the products section of the PointUI website.

feel free to leave any feedback re: the Xperia panel in the comments, we’ll collate it and get it back to PointUI.

I am glad to see something new in WM interfaces, however, this just does not make it for me, at least with this version.

My main complaint about PointUI 2 is that the screen usage is rather poor. First It’s obviously a quick port of a vga layout. Don’t be fooled by the screenshot above by xperiancers which shows a somewhat neatly agenced screen in vga: on your wvga screen, it renders absolutely the same, with a lot of wasted space at the bottom instead of enlarging the applet space and giving more information.
The applet selector (middle “ribbon”) takes a lot of space too: huge layout for such tiny icons you can’t even clic on. You have to credit touchflo3d here for merging the concept of applet selector and notification icons.

Navigation using traditionnal keypad is not usable at this moment as it is plagued with incoherent schemes. There are hundred examples like “if I hit right key from one task item, it does not do the same as hitting the same key on the task item just below”.
So, it has to be a touch interface, right? Not really: too much small icons lie everywhere. Just try to open pocket outlook with this small “+” icon for example.

    Important features are missing:
    phonecalls/message notifications at a glance
    quick access to your agenda
    quick access to browser

Then I understand this is beta, but there is a real whole lot of bugs, ranging from display glitches (email and task applets strangely refresh when selected) to showstopers (My applications panel loose application paths when restarting the panel forcing me to reconfigure all application shortcuts each time I launch the panel).

Finally, but this is more a matter of personnal taste, I’m not really fond of black and white interfaces.

Seems to mee there is still a long road for PointUI to win my heart.

@razma, I’m surprised – I found it very easy to use and haven’t had the problem with the apps being lost at restart.

One issue I have found is that in the all contacts screen, I can’t use my hardware keyboard to select a contact, and can’t make a software keyboard pop up either. Do you have the same problems?

I’ve had the problem with the keyboards yeah, although aswell have not had any problems with loosing apps at startup.

One thing I do notice which is quite enoying, is that when going from portrait to landscape, this sometimes messes up the application possitioning, and to the right of the main focussed tab, you can see a combination of other windows bundled…

Generally though, i love it!! Im new to windows mobile, and pointUI has made it for me, interface wise.

X1 is worse in the word, coz it’s too small to read when you sent/received SMS. Maybe it’s good for teenager.
