Already the first day the blog was launched I got a question on what to expect from the Satio camera.. From the feedback I have gotten on the pictures here I feel very confident that we have created a very good camera for a mobile phone. However – how does it compare to a DSLR or a compact camera?
Yesterday I was on a picnic with my family to Tyresta National Park just outside Stockholm. (Yes we swedes actually do picnics also on cloudy september days.. we don’t have enough sunny warm days in a year to be picky
)
I brought my tripod, my compact camera and my DSLR and shot the same two shots with all three cameras. These are the three cameras:
- Satio
- Sony A700 with Minolta 24mm f/2.8 prime lens
- Ricoh GX100 (zoomed in a bit in an attempt to get the same angle of view.)
I put as many settings as possible on Auto and then tried my best to get roughly the same exposures.
Remember – Don’t interpret this as a professional or even controlled test, Don’t ever think that I want to say that Satio matches a DSLR when it comes to resolution, noise handling or dynamic range. Try to see this as a quick and dirty test to show what to expect from a very normal user situation.
Pixel peepers and others will think that the DSLR and the compact will really be in another class than Satio (you just need to look at e.g. lens size to understand that) However, there are a lot of situations where you wouldn’t want to bring along a DSLR or even a compact camera whilst the Satio is always in our pocket!
The intent of this is just to give you an idea on the differences.
Here’s the line up:
And here are the pictures (all unedited except for the A700 pics that I just cropped in Picasa to get them to 4:3 ratio)
