Xperia X10 will be upgradeable

Hi all,

Sorry for the long absence.

Some reflections after meeting media, analyst and bloggers around the world over the last couple of months.

I have been confronted with the same questions and discussions that you have been interested in from the very beginning. The underlying OS release version that we will use when launching Xperia X10 -why 1.6 and will it be competetive enough? These concerns are quite on top of mind among industry experts as well as advanced users as yourself, which I do appreciate. I will share my experience from enganging in these discussions giving it a context. It is a bit lengthy, so bare with me. :)

The OS versions are somewhat becoming a reference point for people I feel. Similar to processor speed in computers and megapixels in camera phones. I as consumer of course evaluate the same things, buying equipment on my own. However when you start evaluating usage, there are more factors to consider than just the specs.

When I do a product demo, the response about hardware is unquestionable in my view. The design, screen size, ”feel” and overall specs leaves an impression right away. “Beautiful and delight to hold in the hand”,  “Sleek and outstanding” are some frequent quotes.

On the other hand when moving over to talk about the user interface,  I have felt some skepticism in the air since people tend to have adopted quickly to Android release version as their context of competiveness. Quite often, the starting point for this part of the demonstration is a 1.6 release remark if I would generalize my interactions to date.

Interestingly enough the focus on OS version changes over course of a minute or so. Demonstrating the generic Android capabilities with our graphical enhancements is a starting point. The home screen, the immediate responsiveness of the big capacitive screen, the true multitasking that Android allows, the easy and rich access to Google services like maps and android market. All that is there and for me that is the base functionality, which I really appreciate and use on a day to day basis.

Then I introduce the signature applications; Sony Ericsson TimescapeTM and Mediascape and the focus of the discussion shifts from talking about this layer on top of Android, that I refer to as the Sony Ericsson User Experience platform. I now find myself discussing the total  experience rather the OS version in isolation with a great appreciation about what we are bringing to the table. Then the interest of the User Experience platform future roadmap gets to be the talking point instead. What I hope to get across to you all, is that there will be a software update for Xperia X10 that will upgrade the complete Sony Ericsson User Experience Platform based on newer version of the Android OS.

I have probably painted a positive picture, but I am sharing the discussions I have had and my take outs from them. I am not trying to hide from the fact that there are platform upgrades between android 1.6 and 2.1, if utilized can enhance the experience for developers and users. Having that said, I have had discussions with carriers that are very sensitive and concerned generally about taking on devices in their range that are not competetive enough. I have faced head to head comparisons between Xperia X10 and generic 2.1 Android devices (as well as other OS) and carriers have concluded that we still stand strong in comparison.  This because of the layer that we ad on top of the generic  OS.

I am both confident and humble at the same time as we can´t anticipate and cover everything when planning ahead. There will be areas that we can´t over bridge between these releases, but on the total experience I am very confident about this product as the feedback received has been extremely positive. Then there will be an update as well, which I hope settles some of the concernes expressed.

I will not be able to fully understand a developers take on this discussion (and we do have a dedicated community for that), but I would be very interested to hear you feedback. Reading the posts, it ranges from time to market, concerns about whether the product is “future proof” etc, but what are your biggest concerns when it comes to usage? What benefits from the 2.1 release are you most interested in? That would be really interesting for me to get some more input on….

Have a great weekend

Sumit

    @ Limitless And daki
    Thank you! :)
And yeah, you can optionally download the Genie widget in X10 as well.
    - You can download the Sense keyboard or HTC Keyboard from Android Market, it’s Free and published by HTC only, i guess! :D And i think, you should check the Swype Keyboard , you might fall in love with it. :D
    - You can add to as many homescreens as you like with apps that does many pretty things as well. There are a lot of Apps on Android market, that would make you discover a bit of your phone everyday. :)

My feeling is that you will always be one step behind from other, i will wait to buy until the update is done but when that is done there will be more and better phones on the market, so, i don´t know witch phone it will be that i buy then.

    @ Rikard
    Wasn’t X10 scheduled for “early Q1″ release? :o
I mean we are already around ‘mid Q1′ and no signs of it releasing? Any word on the delay or whatsoever you may call it?
    P.S.
I have a good news for X2 adopters, SE conformed to give it a update of WinMo6.5.3 in a near future. :D

The main thing I’d be looking for is a commitment to update the software on the phone for a reasonable (defined!) period, with point updates being released fairly quickly. SE haven’t got a great reputation for this in the past.
It would be great if SE could commit to releasing binary drivers for the hardware so that others could port the newer Android releases to the X10 without compromising SE’s IP, of course this would void warranties and be unsupported by SE but it would show SE’s commitment to tech users.

1: Remote Play functionality with PS3 – This would be a HUGE selling point for me. (Although I’m already sold on the X10, the design is simply superb)
2: Multitouch. Not only for pinch-to-zoom, but for a better experience when using the soft keyboard too.

Also, a general note on updates, and what version OS it’s running etc. Some ppl argue that it doesn’t really matter to most users, because a lot (most?) don’t even update their phones, or know what OS/version of OS they are running. But do remember that the more technical minded among us DO care, and we are also the ones the rest of the potential buyers ask for advice when looking for a new phone. Do not underestimate the power of a good reputation, and even more importantly, do not underestimate the power of a bad one either! :-S

Also, like some commenter’s in here have already pointed out, new OS comes with new features and API’s for those features, I’d hate to not be able to use an app just because the OS is too old.

Really looking forward to MWC now, I really hope we get to see a lot of X10 there. :)

“I have faced head to head comparisons between Xperia X10 and generic 2.1 Android devices (as well as other OS) and carriers have concluded that we still stand strong in comparison.”

Who are these carriers? The user experience is not the most important part!!!

“What I hope to get across to you all, is that there will be a software update for Xperia X10 that will upgrade the complete Sony Ericsson User Experience Platform based on newer version of the Android OS.”

Can you be more specific? Is Sony going to update the X10 to the latest Android OS which currently is at 2.1? If so, when is this going to happen? Do carriers need to request this update or will this be sent out to all X10 devices Over The Air?

Lastly, new capabilities in Android 2.1 include the following: http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/wireless/bluetooth.html

Will the X10 be able to tether data with laptops and other mobile devices? At the end of the day these are not just phones, these are almost mini computers in themselves. Not providing this core capability is taking a step in the wrong direction.

    Cheers!

Aaaa forgot to mention but my friends have mentioned this here the after sales service :D I have been a SE fan since the time of P900 but some later models were really disapponting .
I recently bought this Satio when it got released and love that phone a lot but the phone used to freeze like 10 to 12 times the firmware update came really really late , everyryone knew it was bcoz of the bugs but seems like the SE service people didn’t know that . when I mailed a complaint to SE CC they said it must be a compliant for my satio alone and they said they have a service center in my area and have to physically check my handset hehehehe WOW !!!

Please understand that we are spending sooo much of hard earned money on these devices and after that when we have to interact with the Customer care they treat us like crap :D , let it be a expensive or a budget mobile please ask the CC people to be more polite !!!

So kindly please release the phone bug free or release the firmware asap :D to avoid the contact with CC .

    Sorry if I’m rude ….Cheers mates !!!
