As promised, the first full software update for the Xperia X2 (in older posts on the Xperiancer blog I’ve called this MR1) is now available. Timing on the update is different for certain markets but many of the software versions are available now and I expect the rest to be available by the end of the week. The update will be distributed through the Update Service client found at www.sonyericsson.com/update.

This new software is a healthy step forward – not only does it bring performance and stability improvements throughout the device but it also introduces several new features as well.

Here’s a list of highlights:
- MR1 is built on a new core platform release from Microsoft including a newer version of IE6
- Stability improvements are everywhere with focus on SlideView, Panel manager and TileWave
- Performance improvements focused on rotation and touch performance, the camera, web browsing, the software keyboard and audio streaming
- New features are added like FM radio, Video calling, Auto-lock and Fast GPS which allows for a faster first fix to the GPS signal
- SlideView 2.0 gives better usability throughout with a fresh design; and new actions are build in like new/reply/delete/edit capabilities in messaging and calendar. Music scrolling/searching and the mini-player have also been enhanced
- The new dialer took a big step forward with four easy buttons giving easy access to the dial-pad, favorites, call activity and contacts. We increased the target hit area in contacts for finger friendliness and added user friendly redial functionality
- Based on feedback from you, we really worked hard on the software keyboard (XT9) by improving speed and touch responsiveness

I hope all X2 users get a chance to upgrade and enjoy this new software. Please let us know what you think in the comments section.

Thank you, Aaron

UPDATE: Please disregard the posts from “Aaron” formerly found on this blog and picked up in other forums stating Sony Ericsson is abandoning the X2 – this is simply untrue.  The MR2 software release is still on track for May and will bring increased performance and usability to your X2.   It’s too bad that “Aaron” created that buzz out there but this Aaron is still here and listening to you.

Why no rotation feature?? Why you remove Xtrakt and Experiment 13? If no rotation feature, it means I can’t play the game that need this feature?? I hope the update on May will be better… And I hope too, you listen to X2 fans… And I need your help, if I charge the battery why it doesn’t show 100% just 98%? I had charged my battery for 4-6 hours… What’s the problem… This happened before and after I upgrade the phone… Thanks…

very dissapointed, the device boots and after that while using it, it stalls or hangs and you have to slide out the keyboard to go to the today screen. MR1 is worse than the previous firmware. this is a very bad improvement the device cost me 700 euro , and i’ve used it for a month since february there is something wrong.

    @bamoah

Google Earth requires Android 2.1. I assume the marketplace shows only apps compatible with the handset on which it is viewed.

@Noc. W100-SPIRO could be the walkman-touch  that many users are waiting. although all say it’s a low-end phone. Well, as it’ll be soon in this blog.

@bamoah: yes,,This Application is included in Android 2.1, but you don’t worry. Google defragmented Android 2.2 (froyo)so that you can access any google application from the Android Market.

Dear Sony Ericsson X2 Development team.

First i want to say that i love the design and layout of the X2. It’s just perfect.

That was more or less the only good thing about the phone. The rest that sucks, is the OS, and the lack of stability in it.

Til now i have never had a so crappy and unstable device in my hand, and i want to stress the word NEVER!.

The original version that shipped in february hanged for me at least a couple times per day, but at most over 10 TIMES! I could honestly not rely it the blody phone. Customers where e-mailing me that why am i not available, and when checking the phone, it was just dead.

I talked to the finnish SE customer support, and they said that the march update should help with these issues. So i waited, and updated it yesterday. What can i say, it did some good improvements in speed, but still the blody phone hangs, and it’s more often than before. As soon the display goes into “sleep” mode the phone dies, so today i had to reboot the phone at least 10 time without even using it!!!

Also starting the phone is just a big mess. It takes ages to get the phone up and running. The phone does still NOT bring up the pin-code screen. It just shows me some stupid device-info. Gettint the pin-code screen active, i have to push the Phone-button! Isn’t this ridiculous??

Anyway, please take a look at my post over here: http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=194216 This is my problems with the original firmware. The update has solved most of these problems, but the stability is just a big freaking MESS!

So what i really hope from SE is that they would port Android or Maemo to this phone. An opensource platform combined with this great piece of hardware would most likely inspire the community to build and enhance the user experience on this phone!!!

And one more thing. Why on earth did you guys not get the phone os faster?? Look at Iphone. It’s running on 600Mhz, and it’s fast and quick as hell compared to the X2! What’s the issue not managing to get the speed of the OS/UI/Apps even close to the Iphone’s speed???

So, pease do something serious with the X2!!!
