As promised, the first full software update for the Xperia X2 (in older posts on the Xperiancer blog I’ve called this MR1) is now available. Timing on the update is different for certain markets but many of the software versions are available now and I expect the rest to be available by the end of the week. The update will be distributed through the Update Service client found at www.sonyericsson.com/update.

This new software is a healthy step forward – not only does it bring performance and stability improvements throughout the device but it also introduces several new features as well.

Here’s a list of highlights:
- MR1 is built on a new core platform release from Microsoft including a newer version of IE6
- Stability improvements are everywhere with focus on SlideView, Panel manager and TileWave
- Performance improvements focused on rotation and touch performance, the camera, web browsing, the software keyboard and audio streaming
- New features are added like FM radio, Video calling, Auto-lock and Fast GPS which allows for a faster first fix to the GPS signal
- SlideView 2.0 gives better usability throughout with a fresh design; and new actions are build in like new/reply/delete/edit capabilities in messaging and calendar. Music scrolling/searching and the mini-player have also been enhanced
- The new dialer took a big step forward with four easy buttons giving easy access to the dial-pad, favorites, call activity and contacts. We increased the target hit area in contacts for finger friendliness and added user friendly redial functionality
- Based on feedback from you, we really worked hard on the software keyboard (XT9) by improving speed and touch responsiveness

I hope all X2 users get a chance to upgrade and enjoy this new software. Please let us know what you think in the comments section.

Thank you, Aaron

UPDATE: Please disregard the posts from “Aaron” formerly found on this blog and picked up in other forums stating Sony Ericsson is abandoning the X2 – this is simply untrue.  The MR2 software release is still on track for May and will bring increased performance and usability to your X2.   It’s too bad that “Aaron” created that buzz out there but this Aaron is still here and listening to you.

great great update. certainly speedier and stable. although the keyboard lags when messaging and auto-rotate seems to be turned off, but i guess you guys have already known about that and fixing that right now. hopefully there’s going to be another update for that very soon? what’s in it for x2 for the next (perhaps the last) major update? can’t wait to know..

nyway, no x10 for me, i’m sticking to my x2 :P

      Hi Vanilla

Thanks for the feedback. The next software release will be available in May, and we are actively looking into the messaging experience you describe. As for the auto-rotation, we weren’t satisfied with the behavior leading up to MR1 so the best decision was to disable it. More to come…

    Dear SE,

Please reduce lag on messaging as it is one of the two essential a phone serves other than making call. i look forward to the next update.

this update is great btw. keep up the good work.

    Cheers,

    Hi Aaron,
You gotta be more serious with this X2 coz it has already damaged a lot of SE reputation (not even counting what X1 has done).

I agree with Jason and Rene who posted earlier.
The phone itself is a state-of-the-art piece of work (the only hardware weak point to me is the slow CPU instead of going up to 800MHz or higher as seen in HTC or Samsung)

X2 first released with hell of a nightmare software. you gotta accept that. It was a phone with no reliability. It would cost far more financial damage to a business user than its price tag. I am one of those who have suffered from this. No need to explain as I believe tons of people have made it clear on the internet.

The MR1 looks like nice upgrade with more feature like fast gps, radio, video call but the downside might be even more than that. SPB mobile shell 3.5.3 not working (this is a must on your X2, without it X2 is just not worth using) many software stop working after upgrade (what went wrong here?) Rotation disable, two nice games disappeared, inert keyboard, all these are too much expense for upgrading to MR1.

To me, the most stable software is the original version + February minor update + SPB Mobile Shell 3.5.3
With such system, I can even put 10 more programs to the phone and it still run quite quickly with not too much program freeze or hang (of course it still exists but not too much; I could even stay without resetting the phone on some lucky days)

I did the upgrade, got disappointed and now um back to the previous version (I got my system backed up with SPB Backup, great software). I think I will just skip this MR1 upgrade (though I would really love to have radio) and wait for your MR2 or whatever coming out in May. Really hope you guys carry out something way better.

    Rgds,
    Mong

PS.Tech support (telephone) in Thailand is so hopeless. They know nothing about solving X2 problems. I guess it is the same in other country. you guys are the only hope keep in mind. Thousands of X2 users are waiting.

    Hi Sony.

Having believed the X1 hype, i picked up the phone and while the build quality had issues, it was not too bad, particularly with software support from skilled communities.

The X2 looked great when it was announced, and having tried it hands on i was convinced by its polish and build quality (well, at that point in time at least). I picked the X2 over the X10 because my X1 was in danger of falling apart any moment after just 6 months of use, and i never dropped it once, but that’s another issue altogether.

Having purchased the flagship sony ericsson product at that point of time, i had expectations. It was the premier phone of a premier brand, commanding a price point which could comfortably encompass well-performing competing models with a good bit left over to spend on peripherals. I made a conscious choice to forgo that, and get a premier sony product.

This premier product launched with, what is evident to many, beta software at best. Niggling issues aside, multiple lockups and freezes occurred seemingly randomly with any form of usage.

We were promised updates, with scant acknowledgments that this phone, a premier product of a premier brand, had issues. So we wait, and hey to your guys’ credit, the update came largely on time.

However, this update is once again good on the surface yet does not fix the core issue of stability. Surely the phone feels faster now, the responsiveness and polish seems to have went up a notch. Yet it still hangs and crashes!

I can appreciate having bells and whistles on flashy flagship products, but shouldn’t the focus be on at least stabilising the platform first? Some issues just scream ‘sloppy’ at me. A well known problem is typing lag experienced when using the hardware keyboard for text messages. Looking through forums finds a quick fix that involves removing one small line of code!

Texting is a quintessential function of mobile phones these days. It is startling that such basic issues with a basic fix can be overlooked in this premier product.

As it is, the next update isn’t due any time soon. That’s a few more months of holding a buggy phone, wondering when the next freeze will come, and if I’ll miss anything important because of that. It is an added concern and worry from an angle that should be comfortably covered, for which i am paying a premium price on, and how bewildering is all that?

It is a pity, because the X2 has so much promise. It is a well built product with a promising interface and on the surface still presents itself with a tantalising level of polish.

Beneath all that, though, reeks a callously done up product commanding an absurd price point that really should flay sony ericsson’s reputation to smithereens. I took a look at the X10 yesterday, and was amazed by the look and feel of it. ‘Polish’ once again pops up in my mind.

Thanks to my experience with the xperia line, however, i hope i know better this time around. I’ve never minded paying a premium for sony and sony ericsson products, for i used to believe the quality was worth it. This whole debacle with the xperia seems to point the other way.

I’m sure the xperia team is keenly aware of how intense and competitive the smart phone market is. Maybe we represent a minority and it doesn’t matter if the xperia brand, and by association sony ericsson, stinks to us. Maybe we’re just a guinea pig sample population to see the response of consumers to defective products tagged with a ‘premium’ positioning. Maybe we simply don’t matter.

But i hope that somewhere, someone sees the damage this is causing to the brand, to consumers of the brand’s premium line, and decide something can be done to prevent any further insult on our consuming intelligence.

I made the mistake of paying for your products, you win. Good game.

:( I agreed with everyone above. I did the update and the camera mode is now even slower than before. I got weird slideview.exe error that stopped me from accessing emails and sms at all. I had to reinstall the firmware twice but the problem is still there… Now I have to use X2 as my secondary phone because I don’t know when it will crash and I will lose my valuable sms texts and emails. :(

Aaron, I hope you do understand how this problem is seriously affecting xperia brand and SE as a whole. To what extent?? Well I have told everyone I know not to buy SE phones not matter how nice they look on the paper! A friend asked me if it’s good to buy x10, and I shared my experience with x2 to her which is enough to change her mind to buy Motorola Milestones instead. :( I can’t believe I have to wait a few more months with this crappy phone wondering if the new firmware will help or it will be just another disaster… Please release some quick fixes to the problems we have reported and not let us wait for months for MR2 release.

I wonder what’s the point for SonyEricsson to have a blog that you can reply to, when no-one from the company takes any time to comment on questions and comments.

I really miss the interaction between SE and the users.. SE:s helpdesk is not the answer!

I would really like it if it was possible to geotag tag using celltowers instead of using the gps, I know its not as accurate but its faster and less of a powerdrain. Plus I dont have to keep the gps on at all time to get a picture geotaged.

MR1 is a healthy step forward – what I consider as major problems is as follow:
    1) Lack of Bluetooth rSAP – remote SIM access profile. Without it X2 can’t pair with hands free car audio systems in all Mercedes Benz models from 2005 until know as they all use rSAP. And it’s SE, not WM6.5 issue – all HTC phones have it installed natively from HD2 to all 2-3 years old models. All NOKIA phones have it – and I mean ALL, not only smartphones. Even the iPhone have it and all a.m. phones work/pair falwlessly with the cars audio system. Should I mention that big share of so called business users travel a lot and drive Mercedes Benz cars ? It is a REALLY important issue for all of them (us);

    2) after MR1 was installed besides all improvements – hardware keyboard become VERY laggy;

    3) autorotation feature of the screen doesn’t work well – you always need to open keyboard to go to landscape mode;

Thanks for this update. I am planning to update my phone tonight. But having into account all the bad experience I had with it along with all of the users that posted here. Can you be so polite at least to answer few of the questions as to whether there will be a really stable, fast, non-disabling features release or we are all f**k up and gave our money for nothing? Note even the simple response from you like: “We are working on it” will give some hope!

Oh yeahhh and the problem with the phone randomly and quietly gone dead after the screen turned off and entered standby mode. No buttons even the soft reset button bring the phone back on. Have to remove and reinsert the battery to boot up the phone again :( This is not only annoying but FREAKING me out as I can’t predict when the phone is going to die again and I will miss important calls!!! I missed several already because of this! that I didn’t notice the phone gone dead by itself when idle. This is making me mad! If it’s not resolved as soon as possible! I will never buy SE phone again and will tell other! nyvyx is righ.! ARE YOU SURE YOU’RE SONY ERICSSON ???

I was really hoping to see some positive feedback here, but unfortunately it seems that most of the customers are unhappy. I am a loyal SE customer and I hope SE realize that people still have faith in them and therefore they continue to buy their products even when they know it contains some flaws and issue.

I really hope SE does something about it, I really hope they care and not only pretend to care. Seeing is believing and we must see something different, fixing issues and bringing other issues is no good at all. I think the first priority now should be to fix the lag in the keyboard and also get the auto rotation back. SE your tag is make.believe so I hope you can stick to this tag.

I won’t be like those people who have no patience at all and make fast decisions to abandon SE products or not recommend them to others, I will be patient because patient is a virtue so let’s hope eventually I will see something that will change my mind. I still want to thank you for the great improvements you gave us with the X2 but we want more because we deserve more, don’t you agree dear readers ?

    Ok guys, let’s be fair.

I have X1 for 17 months and this device is a really great companion.
Reliable, working, stable, powerful, all fine.

Now it’s few days after X2 upgrade and I’m sorry, but right now this is a disaster.
Whether I don’t get something or this device is a biggest shame I’ve seen in my life.

Basically this is unpredictable, unstable, unfinished and not proper
piece of motherfucking crap I’ve used.

Current behaviour of X2 is like a first firmwares I’ve seen on P990,
    few years back.

After upgrade I’ve had like 6 freezes through 48 hours – WTF is that?!

Freezing without any reason – just with normal, ordinary actions I do!
The software is completely not optimized at all, looks like a fucking BETA!!!

I just can’t believe it. Just can’t believe
they really released this piece of crap.

Unbelievable. This is constantly crashing device.
Once SlideView crashed. Once camera stopped working – soft reset.
Now it crashed after playing a movie from the Total Commander.

It’s even more shit – today I opened default WM image gallery and
used it’s basic edit functions – used automatic contrast.

Wanted to save and what! Bum – the device cannot save it! Maybe after cropping it,
the device says…. Like a lack of memory!

I mean – I know what software is, always has it’s glitches, right.

But what is happening to X2 is like really really bad joke!!!!!!!

People at SE – what are doing??!!

So, in fact the 600 Euro piece behaves like a beta stage.

Definitely, the X2 goes back to SE, I want my money back.
You won’t fuck with me anymore.
    Unacceptable. Too much.

    I was a fan of SE smartphones (used P800, P910, P990, P1, X1)
    All of them served well.

This X2 not. Over. Never gonna buy any SE in my life.

And I think you’ll never learn. Never.
In the competitive and tight smartphone market, you are rude enough
to release something like that. And stupid.

Of course I’ll not leave it this way. I’ll spread the info around.

X2 has huge negative feedback right now and I’m not alone.
    Just look here!!

What is here is amazing. 90% of negative comments after upgrade.
This device didn’t bahave like this before!!!
