As previously communicated we will update the entire 2011 Xperia portfolio* to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) as part of our next software upgrade. Our developers are now busy merging our current Xperia™ software with the new features in Android 4.0

With the holiday season around the corner, we’re happy to confirm that the first 2011 Xperia™ smartphones will be upgraded to Android 4.0 starting from end March/early April 2012. The first smartphones to get the upgrade are Xperia™ arc S, Xperia™ neo V and Xperia™ ray. Soon after, starting from end April/early May, Xperia™ arc, Xperia™ PLAY, Xperia™ neo, Xperia™ mini and mini pro, Xperia™ pro, Xperia™ active as well as Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman™ will get their upgrades.

This will be a phased roll out over several weeks and all kits for a specific phone model will not get the upgrade at the same time. For more information about what’s going on during the process of an Android software upgrade, please check out this blog post  from our Developer World team. It gives a comprehensive overview of the steps we need to take to ensure great software qualityonce it reaches the phone in your hand. Below is a summary of the process:

  • It starts with public push when we as a manufacturer get access to the new Android release from Google
  • Our developers take the existing Xperia™ software and combine it with the new Android release
  • Once the coding is done we want to make sure the quality of the new software meets our, our partners and your expectations
  • Now we feel the new software is ready but we also need to make sure it’s approved by our external partners
  • All good. We’re all set to roll-out the new software. The story continues in your Xperia™ smartphone

As you can see, there are many steps involved and it’s a comprehensive upgrade in terms of number of products.

So, how do you know when the new software is available for your Xperia™ smartphone?

Owners of  2011 Xperia™ smartphone will receive a notification in the phone instructing them to download the software over the air via 3G or WiFi. Alternatively, they will have the option to connect to a computer and download it via PC companion.

Over the next months we will be keeping you up to date on progress and we will also share video demos of the new software running on 2011 Xperia™ smartphones.

* “2011 Xperia™ Portfolio” refers to the following products: Xperia™ arc and arc S, Xperia™ PLAY, Xperia™ neo and neo V, Xperia™ mini and mini pro, Xperia™ pro, Xperia™ active, Xperia™ ray as well as Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman™

+ Improve MW600 Bluetooth handset, it is not showing song’s name and even name of a person who is calling… Now in pair with Arc S it’s quite useless.

File manager and media controls on the lock screen are all the updates I need. Maybe the “hold volume button for next song” one found on some of the walkman series phones. Thank you!

is it possible that the internal storage of xperia arc can be increased or some how freed because some of the apps can only be installed in internal storage and cannot be moved to the sd card and that is why the internal storage gets occupied and we cannot update any app , a low phone storage message is given everytime….. can anything be done about this problem…….

i went through a lot of blogs …. and found an app called Linke2Sd that moves the apps that are only installed on internal memory to the SD card… but it only works if the device is rooted….
      So,
if ice cream 4.0 can accomodate an app that moves all system apps to SD card that will be really awsum!!

    Hello;

Could Sony include in this update the default app that can sync with my pc Microsoft outlook without need to log to google account and that include contact, calendar, tasks and notes, like has others android smartphone?

I’m a mobile device user before came the smart phone.
I used to use the mobile phone app that can sync with my outlook app
Like contact, calenDar, taskand note because its to important for my bussenes.
I get surprised when I saw my new phone xperia arc don’t has any default application to sync with my outlook apps and have been a pain try to get any simple way to sync my phone with my pc outlook information without use any other programs or without use internet to sync with my Google account.

Just made a short Skype video call (about 30MB?) which cost me approx. 4,5USD!!!
    It’s absurd.
WIth my monthly phone payment plan (about 17USD per month) I get free unlimited voice ad video calls plus up to 2000 SMS.
I can’t afford to pay this kind of extra “fee”!
When I used my old k800i, I called my family (which had a cheap V630i) via VDF everyday: I placed – at least – 2 video calls each weekend and I “only” paid the monthly price. No extra payments were required.
And none of us had to install any extra software. I just phoned my family as I would in a “normal” voice call. That was it.
Why have Android/Sony phones gone back?
Won’t Xperia phones receive software to allow regular 3G video calls as HTC or Samsung phones still do? Many of us, consumers, hope so!

I hope so, as I am the one who has the latest phone model and the only one who can’t make video calls… Sad, really.

Please, give us “out of the box video calls back!
    Thank you,
