Our friends at Ericsson have now initiated the first stage of the Ericsson Application Awards 2012. The competition is an opportunity for developers to win both considerable money (€ 15,000) and fame (access to Ericsson promotion and distribution). In the first stage, Ericsson is calling on you to develop “Apps for Good”, which means applications focused on solving global challenges such as education, poverty alleviation, refugees, disaster relief, agriculture, access to energy, transportation solutions, smart homes and buildings, and weather.

Sounds like a fun and pretty useful challenge, right? In our opinion, it’s a really commendable idea, and we’d love to see more philanthropic initiatives like this.

Sign up for the challenge, and read all about it on the Ericsson Application Awards website.

Developers, are you up for a challenge? We’re proud to team up with Ericsson to co-sponsor this year’s Ericsson Application Awards (EAA), and we’re very excited to announce the first mini-challenge for EAA 2012, which starts September 14. By taking part in the EAA competitions, developers have a unique opportunity to gain exposure within the telecommunications world, as well as a chance to reach out to customers through Ericsson’s marketing channels, PLUS the opportunity to win Sony Ericsson phones and €15,000 in prize money.

Yesterday, the winners of the Ericsson Application Awards were crowned. And the winners were the Italian team JustBit in the student category, and the UK based team HipSnip in the company category. Team JustBit’s winning Android™ application use RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology and wireless connectivity to keep track of what groceries you have at home. This way the team tried to address not only an everyday problem that most people can relate to, but also a bigger issue with domestic food waste.

Company category winners team HipSnip presented a well structured and thought through idea and application regarding personal shopping. Check out the Ericsson and the Ericsson Application Awards website to learn more about the winning teams and the competition.

Hello,

I am a guest blogger from Ericsson and I work with applications and application stores. Now in cooperation with  Sony Ericsson Developer World we organize a global competition for developers and students.

Ericsson Widget Awards is a global competition to inspire both aspiring programmers and hardcore coders to come up with fun, useful and engaging widgets for mobile devices. Show off your creativity and compete for a total prize pool of € 30 000 and a trip to Sweden for the prize ceremony in April.

You only need basic skills in HTML, Java and CSS for mobile and to let your creativity loose and make a fun, useful, useless or just nutty widget. If you manage to charm the jury, you just might be the one to win!

The total prize sum is 30.000 EURO! Please submit your contributions before the submission deadline March 1 2011.
