Back in June of last year we caught up with Wayne McBean, Director of Global Enterprise and New Channel Development to discuss the latest on Xperia in Business (XiB), Sony’s programme for enterprise and business.
Well, we recently sat down with Bjorn Ahlberg, Head of Xperia in Business Programme at Sony Mobile, and after checking out the latest XiB video we wanted to ask him a few questions…
Tell us a little bit about the Xperia in Business journey; where did it all start and why?
BA: It actually started in 2010 with the emergence of the BYOD trend (Bring Your Own Device), which views the best “business devices” as the best “consumer devices” with built-in business capabilities.
What are the three challenges that businesses face in the mobile tech space today?
BA: Employees are bringing their own smart mobile devices to work whether businesses want it or not, as these devices are perfectly capable. It’s an unstoppable consumer trend driving mobilization of the workforces. This presents challenges to secure company information, protect personal employee data on devices and to support the variety of device types and brands. Businesses also face the challenge of reforming their IT systems and organizations from PC-centric to mobile-centric. But it’s not just about the challenges, as there are also opportunities – for example, to cut company costs while allowing employees to use their favorite and familiar devices.
What makes Xperia in Business different to what other competitors offer in the same space?
BA: In the IT space we don’t necessarily want to be different, but we do want to make sure Xperia devices work well with the major business and IT solutions. There are common standards required, which we adhere to, and there are also areas we have developed on-top of those standards, for example in the area of Security. We’re able to address BYOD, by developing some of the best premium designed smart mobile devices, with features that are useful for consumers and also in many business environments, such as water and dust proof capabilities, low light camera and more.
What are three stand out features that businesses can take advantage of thanks to our Xperia in Business offering?
BA: Sony’s smart mobile devices are among the best in the market, integrating Sony’s unique imaging technologies and waterproof/dust resistant capabilities with the latest advancements from the mobile industry. The latest devices also have up-to 2 days of battery life.
These smartphones and tablets are among the most security hardened Android devices, with the creation of enhanced robust security architecture on the system level. That means a stronger security platform for software development and distribution, a secure boot loader, Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) and up-to 256-bit AES encryption on device level.
We also have a hardware encryption key, boosting encryption performance on a network level. That means we’re able to further secure email with S/MIME.
There is also a wide offering of easily connected smartwear products as well as web services and support.
With communication technologies changing and progressing so quickly, how do tech companies ensure their software stays current and supportive to businesses?
BA: The base IT standards evolve at a controlled pace and slower than one might think due to solution providers, installed base of systems, security and interoperability requirements.
How are you incorporating smartwear with Xperia in Business’ latest offering?
BA: With Smart Notifications you can get all necessary notifications discretely and efficiently sent to a smartwatch – using apps from Google Play. You can easily reject a call, spot a message or find out about your next meeting without taking your device out of your pocket or bag. We are also working with a number of leading companies developing smartwear solutions, focusing on the use of GPS or other functionality and sensors.
There are other incorporations as well, including something called ‘proximity unlock’. That allows the smartband or smartwatch to connect to a designated phone or tablet and unlock it based on a distance that the customer has set.
What’s next for Xperia in Business?
BA: We will continue to harden security, develop our smartwear and service offering as well as enhancing support to our partners and customers. And of course we will ensure to enable our portfolio for Google’s Android Work.
