The weekend is so close we can almost taste it, but before you head off to enjoy yourselves, we’ve brought you the latest news in the world of Sony and Android – and this week you certainly don’t want to miss out!

First up, we wanted to tell you about a wonderful photo exhibition created by UNICEF and Sony Corporation. The exhibition is called ‘Look at me! Refugee children in the Netherlands’ and has been created to encourage children to express themselves through photography. Asylum seeking children in the Netherlands will have the chance to portray their emotions through the lens in the hope that their stories will inform and inspire audiences, and increase support to improve the lives of these children. We think this is a fantastic idea and we can’t wait to see the photography. Check out the project here.

Elsewhere this week, Sony was making waves as famous surfer Tia Blanco took to the waves in Nicaragua to showcase Sony’s 4K capabilities. Using Sony A6300 with a Sony 20mm f/2.8 lens and accompanied by Sony Artisans David McLain and Gabe Rogel, a fantastic video entitled ‘My Journey’ was created.

In addition to the A6300, the team also utilized a Sony 4K Action Cam as Tia recorded footage of herself surfing to complement the video. It’s safe to say the team made a splash. You can check out the final video below and for the full experience, be sure to watch it in 4K!

Some exciting news now for all the gaming fanatics out there – this weekend ONLY PS4 online multiplayer is free for all! So whatever your choice of game is, you can round up all your friends, or find new ones online from around the world – but be speedy as you have from 10:00 BST 24 June until 10:00 BST 27 June 2016 to play.

So whatever it is you’re doing this weekend, spare some time to boot up all your favourite titles and get online.

Meanwhile over at Developer World, earlier this week it was announced that the Xperia Home badge API is now publicly available for developers to try out. But what exactly does that mean? Well for starters, the badge allows you as an app developer to specify your own unread notification badges on your application icons.

And by interacting with the Xperia Home application, the Xperia Home badge API allows any application to set a notification badge on its own launcher icon. For example, if you make a messaging app you can show the number of unread messages in a badge on the app icon, such as in the email icon above. Clever, right? Head over to Developer World to read more.

04_SmartWatch_3_WhiteIn other news, an Android Wear update is now rolling out for SmartWatch 3. The firmware includes security, battery, GPS and stability-related improvements.

Finally in case you missed it, this week we caught up with the leading creatives at Sony’s Creative Center studios in Sweden and Japan to discuss the design inspiration behind our new Xperia X series. If you’ve ever wondered what the Unified design concept is or whether features or design are the most important factors when creating a smartphone, then it’s well worth checking out.

That’s all we have time for this week – but we’ll be back soon and in the meantime you can head over to our Twitter channel to catch up on the latest news.
