At Sony Mobile, we design our hardware and software to last for many years. However, as with any smartphone, we know that performance can vary over time and after a year or two, your Xperia device might not be quite as zippy as the day you first excitedly unboxed it.

Fortunately, there are a few easy tips that can help you improve speed, performance and ensure your Xperia smartphone remains in top condition. Follow these steps to perform a smartphone spring clean.

Keep Smart Cleaner Enabled

All Xperia X series smartphones (Xperia X, Xperia X Performance, Xperia XA, Xperia XA Ultra, Xperia XZ, Xperia X Compact, Xperia XZs and Xperia XZ Premium) come with Smart Cleaner. This feature tackles one of the biggest causes of smartphone slowdown; unused apps running in the background eating up RAM and general phone clutter that takes up ROM.

It is enabled out of the box but you can check if this is activated by going to ‘Settings’ > ‘Storage & Memory’. While you’re there tap ‘Uninstall Apps’ which will open a list of all apps and display how many times you have used them. The least used are at the top of this list by default and deleting these will help to free up Internal Storage.

How to free up internal storage

Head to ‘Settings’ > ‘Storage & Memory’ > three dot menu > ‘Advanced’ and then select ‘Storage’. If you’re close to using the full capacity of internal storage, this might be slowing things down for you. Consider moving photos and videos to cloud storage via Google Drive which comes pre-loaded on Xperia devices. Once your content is uploaded to the cloud, delete it from your phone memory and, voila, free storage space.

Alternatively you can connect your Xperia to a PC/Mac and drag and drop files from your Xperia to the computer; if you are unsure how to do this,  Xperia Companion is there to help.

Finally, consider purchasing an SD card, a great investment for your Xperia to free up internal storage for better performance.

If you already have an SD card, enter ‘Settings’> ‘Storage & Memory’ and hit ‘Move to SD Card’, content which can be moved to the SD Card will be shown together with the information how much space will be freed up on the internal storage when moved.

Download The Latest Updates

Be sure to download the latest software updates when the notification appears. New software updates frequently include performance boosts and will also help fix bugs or issues that can impact phone performance.

Widgets and Wallpapers

Home screen widgets are super-useful but can eat up RAM. As part of your smartphone spring clean, review your home screen and, if you spot something you don’t use too often, hold down on it and drag all the way up to ‘Remove From Home Screen’. Live wallpapers can also add to the device workload. If your device has been used for a few years, consider switching to static wallpapers.

How often should you restart your smartphone?

When is the last time you turned your phone off? Your phone stores a lot of stuff in its memory and it is good practice to turn your device off and on around once a week. See how long your phone has been on by going to ‘Settings’ > ‘About Phone’ > ‘Status’ > ‘Up Time’. You might be surprised how long it has been!
